I have a 5 speed 6cyl 2.8 My problem is that my battery was dead so I recharged it no problem at that point. Truck sat for a few days. When I put batter back on to start it I heard a real loud tapping noise, turned off engine and rechecked the oil. Oil wasnt low but smelled like gas. I was afraid to start it again after that. Need to know what is causing this and how to fix it. P.S, never had a problem before this.:banghead:

its possible that a lifter is/was hung up until it refilled with oil that made the tapping noise. Gas smell in your oil could be bad rings. What kind of mileage? Do you burn oil?

Mileage is high over 100,000 but it hasnt burnt any oil.

I'd start with fresh oil/filter and drive it for a couple of days and smell the oil again. For a cheap fix and preventitive maintenence I'd use some auto-rx in the oil to free up those lifters and or valves.
