Which fuse blows when the key is turned on, fuse 5 or fuse 1 in the instrument panel fuse panel? Both are 15-amp fuses.

With a new fuse installed, do the hazard lights work with the key off? Do all the bulbs flash with the hazards on?

If you'd like a copy of the wiring diagrams from the factory service manual, send me a private message with your request and an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments.

There are a lot of circuits running off of that fuse #5. You've got your work cut out for you in determining which is causing the fuse to blow when the key is turned on. The effected circuits are listed below. Keep in mind that your Taurus may not have all of these options.

Multifunction switch
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module
Illuminated Entry Module
Shift Lock actuator
Digital Instrument Cluster
Rear defrost control
Rear defrost timer
Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) module
Liftgate defrost/wiper module (wagon only)
Airbag (SRS) diagnostic monitor
Daytime Running Lights
Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S)
Transmission Range (TR) sensor
Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS)This circuit is only active with the key in the run position, so unfortunately the fact that the fuse blows with the key in the run position doesn't narrow your search much. Based on your posts, I'm suspecting that the items in italics above are not applicable to your vehicle, so that may limit your search somewhat.

Since you know what it takes to get to the multifunction switch, you may want to leave that unplugged and see if the fuse still blows with that disconnected and the key in the "run" position.
