Is an A/T starter different than a M/T starter?

My brother has an A/T 93 Eagle Talon ES, and the starter went bad. He bought another starter from a friend with a M/T 93 Eagle Talon, and when we installed the starter the car starts but now it makes the sound of a gear grinding, but I don't think it is.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but aren't A/T starters different from M/T starters? I'm pretty sure they are because my dad's '73 Chevelle is an Auto and has a Manual starter and it use to burn the starters out every month when he use to drive it.

I'm pretty sure theres a difference and the guy tells me otherwise but what do you guys think?

The starters should be the same. Does the gear grinding sound like its coming from the starter?

The noise does sound like its coming from around the area of the starter.

Is the starter releasing when you let off the key or is it still spinning with the flexplate?

It releases but the gear in the starter sounds like its hitting the flywheel.

Like I said I'm pretty sure the starters for auto's and manual's are different. And I think I'm right, I went on eBay and I found one for an auto and one for a manual. The gear on the automatic's I found on eBay look exactly like the gear on the starter that came off my brothers car, and the gear on the manual starters look exactly like the one my brother got from his friend.

wow, they are 2 different starters for that car. Thats very odd. Anyways get the right one and maybe that will fix your problem.

Yeah, but I'm also afraid the manual starter might have damaged the flywheel.
