2002 4wd Blazer front suspension durability

I recently purchased a 2002 4wd 4dr blazer with 126,000 miles. I took it to the dealer and they tell me I need the whole front suspension rebuilt: upper and lower control arm ball joints, idler arm, pitman arm, stabilizer bar struts, front (and rear) shocks. Is this typical for this model/mileage, or was somebody bombing around gravel pits in this? Any reason to pay the $900 for GM p/n Bilstein shocks when I can buy aftermarket Bilsteins for $225? Thanks.

These trucks are hard on the front end, especially the ball joints. Good parts are costly, that being said, if you can find them from other sources, you could save a few dollars. I personally use MOOG front end parts. They seem to be very durable, and have a good warranty. I myself like Bilstien shocks, but I will never buy them from the dealer. There are other sources you can purchase them from without paying a higher mark-up from the dealer.
And for sure, buy only quality front end suspension parts.

No reason to pay dealer prices for simple mechanical needs. It's not rocket science, any good tire shop can do it for about a third of what the dealer wants. Or you can do it yourself and really save, always a good excuse for buying more tools too. I did mine and saved enought to buy an impact wrench and ratchet set.

Definately get balljoints that have a lifetime warranty if possible. Replaced all 4 almost 2 years ago and have already since replaced 2 of them under warranty.
