Ok, I asked the same question in the honda forums now im asking it here to to see what you vdub guys think.
I'm looking to get a new car in the next 3 months. And I've gotten it down to either a 94-98 vr6 gti or a 92-96 prelude vtec. I've driven a 2000 mk4 gti vr6 and a 1997 mk3 8v. But I have never driven or been in a 92-96 prelude. The motors in both cars vr6 vs. vtec seem to be in the same area when it comes down to horsepower and tourqe. I'm more interested in straight line performance than going through the twisties but I still want to be able to do ok on twisty roads. Help me decide!

The VR6 is lighter and got more torque, and is bigger.
But the Prelude has 18hp more, on paper that is.
And no, the Prelude is not rwd.

Get the GTI then, you will have more potential with the V6-more dissplacment and that will be important if you are just interested in draging

actually it is first on his mind beacause thats what he wants to do with it. id say gti vr6. i like 'ludes but a vr6 turbo will have a better chance of getting higher hp than a i4 vtec lude. the ludes come with thier ingines already pushing almost their limit, from what ive heard it will need new internals to get high hp wiht a turbo. vr6 can handle up to 400 hp with stock according to deakins(vw god). plus v6's just plain sound nicer and fell better to drive.

Yeah I think I'm leaning more towards the VR6, since I like everything about the car. I hate the interior in the prelude, 92-96, really ugly dash.

i actually kinda like the dash but the gti is much nicer. i really hate the tails on that 'lude though damn... whereas the gti has lovely smoked tails that match the car so perfectly... so im biased hehehe. get the gti. or even cooler try to find a vr6 corrado. but you will ahve to sink way more $$$ into the car unfortuneatly.

I drive a 95 GTI VR6. It's lightning fast for such a little car. I'm actually trying to sell it though, and am going to replace it with a 93-95 Prelude Vtec. The GTI's are faster, almost twice the cargo room and much more spacious interior, great at cornering, more luxurious, and over all a nicer drive. The GTI, however is atrocious to maintain. The repairs amount quicker than the speeding tickets, and I like to drive fast. my last repair on a falty ABS switch, I would have payed $100 in parts and labor for a honda, I payed almost $400. Each repair that I've had to do has been more than twice as expensive and twice as frequent as my previous car a honda. I guess it depends on what your really interested in, more inportantly whether your willing to pay up the nose for it. -Sean

Its true that the GTI will cost much more to maintain, however which prelude are you talking about... You have to be careful you don't end up with a weak SI instead of 190hp Prelude Vtec... THe Vtec has 4 wheel steering which is great but in comparison most VW's come with ASR. Overall I think you will have better luck finding a GTI than a Prelude Vtec and although it will cost more to maintain... it will be well worth the money.

Honda Qualudes, I mean Preludes are FWD. :screwy:
And they both suck. A Honda is, well a Honda.
The GTi is alright but far too heavy (even with a VR6) and lacking in the looks department. Why not stick that VR in a Mk2 GTi. It would be a bit on the nose heavy side, but it'll be quite a bit faster than either of the two cars you are considering. :2cents:

I've spanked preludes, including new SH models with a 93 Acura Integra with limited mods. I currently own a GTI VR6 which would easily spank my old integra in both acceleration and handling, go with the a VR6.

get a 1.8T if you want power for your bucks
VR6 sounds nice but need plenty of money to make it go really fast
whereas a 1.8T can get you going with just some minor mods

Yo Vin.ZNT, the 1.8 T isn't really too fast man, put cold air and exaust on a reg 2.0L one and it'll be a bit more then a head ahead of the 1.8T. This comming from experience. The VR6 is the way to go though, a friend of mine owns a damb tight one that just currently smoked the 2002 dodge viper in town. He spent about $10K on mods but I installed most of them for him so it was a bit lighter on his wallet, and his car isn't actually street legal anymore but luckly we have some dirty local cops around here. heh heh. Don't be cheap get the VR6. But if you don't have the cash like me just get the 2.0L and strip the hell out of it, that what I did to mine, it'll run high 12's now and it's a *ucking bowl full of fun on the track twisties!!!!!! If you want to know more about stripping the GTI just post a thread and i'll give you some anwsers!

wait...
you are saying a CAI and an exhaust can get a 2.0L as fast as a 1.8t.....
O_o
get a supercharger, and you STILL won't beat a 1.8T
they'll do the talking:
http://www.jettaowners.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=7350&page=1&pp=15
and like I said, you'll get more power from the same amount of money you spent on your 1.8t than a VR6, unless it's high numbers, like 10k$, then the VR6 will probably become faster because of the larger engine
the 1.8T gets the head start because it has a turbo, but ultimately, the VR6 will rule over it with the right amount of money, which is pretty much
and also because the 1.8T comes with a turbo, so it'll get more power for the bucks compared to a VR6 for the first while

The 2.0L engine's suck unless they are in something other than a Mk3 or Mk4 dub. Even turboed they max out at about 250hp at the fly.

yeah CAI and a straight pipe, but maybe it was because there was another guy in his car. My car is stripped down now an it will do the 1/4 in the high 12's, plus its a lot of fun on the track!

I agree with VIN.ZNT at first it's easy to make the 1.8T a hell of a lot faster than the VR6. Money to hp ratio is a lot more economical than the VR6. I should know I have a VR6. A chip on a 1.8T will give 20-35hp and around 30-40tq. abd's new CAI has proven to give around 11hp, downpipe, exhaust and dv will help it breath easier, and a FMIC will keep it much cooler than the forearm sized stick side mount intercooler.
Now if you have enough money to buy a turbo or supercharger for the VR6 and get a big valve turbo head you are now looking at the very least 300whp. Add Schrick 248 turbo cams plus the obvious cat back exhaust and you have an evil machine wich will send you into the next dimension.
It's your choice man.

The exuast note on the Vr6 is in a compleatly different realm of badass than the fart can, pissed off bumble bee noise of the VTecs.
