Hello everyone and thanks in advance! I have a 1990 olds cutlass supreme convertible with a 3.1L v6 with an auto.
here is my problem; earlier today I was driving through my town and I was doing approx. 25mph and I was giving it steady gas and it just died. no sputter, no buck, no nothing! it just died. I put it in neutral and restarted just fine. I turned the corner and started to come to a stop and it did it again! I restarted and drove home. I pulled in my driveway and put it in park, it died. I restarted and popped the hood to see if maybe some plug wires had come undone, it died. I restarted, but I couldnt see anything. the strangest thing is that it runs as smooth as can be even up to the point it dies! Any ideas?

sorry everyone, I am losing my mind! the car is a 1992 like the listing states, not the 90 as my description states.

Welcome to AF.

If your fuel filter hasnt been changed in the last 10-20K miles then that could be your trouble too, they can get clogged and cause symptoms as this.
You can check your fuel pressure with a guage you can rent/buy, should be 34-47 PSI.

If thats not clogged then I'd chck out the ignition control module under the coils, and maybe hav it and the coils tested .

ok here is an update: the problem does not happen while the car is cold. once it warms up to normal operating temp it starts dieing. I went up and had the ignition control module tested today and it tested good four times consecutively. could it still be a fuel problem with it not doing it until it warms up? I am going to purchase a fuel pressure gauge and check but I am stumped!

Might also check for trouble codes when it dies.

Thier's some codes and a how to in the N-Body Problem Diagnosis (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1989) under Trouble codes.

Ok, here is another update. I have my olds up at a chevy dealer and they are having alot of trouble finding the problem. so far it is not the fuel pump, regulator, ecm, map sensor, iac, fuel rail, or injectors. I would imagine that they can read any codes that might pop up but they say that they have no clue and have had it for nearly three days now and have nothing to report. does anyone have any ideas that I can tell them to check?

TCC in the tranny?

What do you think ZI?

Just for shi*s and giggles, check your battery connections for corrosion or loose terminals.

Actualy it sounds more like a crank shaft position sensor.
They crap out often and if its intermitant dying it can take time to track down, but I would assume they would see any codes if that was the case.......

The MAF wiring is typical to get damaged too because the wires are to short.
