I've officialy started my mk1.5 project, i purchesed a low km 3sgte out of a 1994 mr2 complete with aftermarket fuel cut defender by-pass for a decent price. I'm going to start putting it into my 86 mr2 this spring, I'm putting in a walbro 255Lph fuel pump, t3\t4 turbo setup with external wastegate, stainless steel header and downpipe and a 3 inch freeflow exhaust with no cats. I'll size out the intercooler after the engines in the car and add a manual boost controller for extra fun. I'm gonna do a custom gauge cluster in the factory insturment panel location, my question is does anyone know of a cheap reliablely accurate gauge company that does white faced metric gauges in 2/16" for pressure and tempature and 3 3/8 for the speedo and tach, everything has to be electric except oil pressure and boost/vacum gauge i'll be using a fuel gauge, oil temp, voltmeter, water temp, boost/vacum, oil pressure, tach and speedo, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Ok, so i got the engine all cleaned up, I'm just waiting for some final parts then I'll start the swap one question I have for anyone who has done the swap is what did you use for axles
ac427cpe
03-14-2008, 12:44 PM
uh yikes. you have a long way to go still then. just making sure but you realize that it's very wiring intensive and will require you to fabricate new motor mounts for the engine/tranny and car, right?
that said, contact chico race works: http://www.chicoraceworks.com/contact.php
tell them what it's for, they sell axles that are the correct length w/ the right splines for what you want to do.

I do indeed know about how labour intensive the swap is, I have been researching the process for a full year now, I've already modified the wiring harnessess and built one for the swap and i'll make motor mount brackets as I get ready to mount the drivetrain into the car

:runaround: Its not, I'm waiting on a company in the states to figure out whats going on so I don't have my header, turbo and dump pipe and also the guy I bought the engine from still hasn't found the ecm and I have a giant mass of parts I have to put into the engine and I still have to buy an intercooler and muffler, I did however discover that 3sgte exhaust studs are immensly difficult to extract and have a steady hand and an ample supply of heli coils is a must, but as soon as I have the turbo kit I'll have her together in a couple of weekends, because hey my g/f broke up with me so I have plenty of time to construct, but I'm suffering from not being able to drive her, I haven't driven her more then 40kms since november, and 20 of those were at 160 km an hour, I'll keep you posted and hopefully have some pics up soon

ok, its been a productive weekend, the 4age is out, the old mounts are cut off and the mounting location is clean, the wiring is done so now i just have to position the engine in place, make motor mount brackets and do the mechanical side of things, i'll keep you posted on the swap and upload some pics when i figure out how to

quick update, I'm as far as I can go, iI'm waiting on parts, and the ideas to stop swirling in my head, I'm going to be putting in a water methanol injection system for more boost and timing and I'm gonna be welding quarter inch plate steel onto the rear support pillars so when I launch her she won't twist the car like a lemon wedge, the cool thing though is I have a buddy and hes giving me a couple sheets of quarter inch thick checker plate, yes I said checker plate, so not only will it be functional but also very sexy:grinno: thats all I have for now but as soon as I have all my parts she will live once more as the gorgeous sexy ill tempered redhead shes always been, just a lot faster:iceslolan

Ok, so I've been recieving parts for days on end now, I'm assembling the engine, I've got all the seals and gaskets replaced and the oil system primed I just need to make oil lines for the turbo, but alas I've hit the wall again, the timing belt hydralic tensioner was siezed up and in attemps of freeing it up broke the housing and watched all the fluid come gushing out, the good thing is that the tensioner is only $40 but the downside is that its two weeks away, and I still haven't got the ecm

ok, so the engine compartments painted and so is the engine, I went with a very unique color combo, black engine, black engine compartment with gun metal silver accents, polished header, turbo and dump pipe with polished intercooler pipes, I'm down to the stage where I'm about to mount the engine in the car for the last time, then all I have to do is connect everything and make the front and rear mounts and position the intrcooler, then the small things, like new rear calipers and wheel bearings, mount the battery and build the exhaust and then fire her up and drive her to the exhaust shop to get my piping built for the intercooler and then take her for a nice long cruise with the gas pedal firmly planted to the floor, of course not till after i make sure theres no leaksm, long live the t3\t4 hybrid mk 1.5

awesome, a quick question though, what shimless setup did you go with, and also anyone know of a supplier that has body panels for the 2, like floor boards, because this winter I'm replacing my floor boards and patching up the body and getting it painted and if I have the time and money moroso 6 quart oil pan, arp head studs, main studs and rod bolts along with acl race bearings and performance rings. also getting the valves re angled with over sized stainless valves plopped in with heavy duty springs and a 272 intake cam with a 264 exhaust and adjustable sprockets, I'll post some pics of my beast in my gallery and leave a link

its been a long month scrounging parts and fittings but after countless hours of fabricating waiting for parts and wiring the mighty 2 returned from the dead tonight, three cranks and she sparked to life, and i'll tell you that wonderful sound of the beast forged in the fires of hell made me smirk, those ricer hondas in this city will never know what hit them, the only other part I'm waiting on is my water/meth kit to run insanely high boost, and it wasn't very hard nor challenging to build the mk1.5 but time consuming, I've come a long way considering this was my first build ever and did it all myself with advice from a good friend who egged me onto doing the swap and another good friend who welded the motor mount brackets solid and finished my side scoops

so i took her for the first drive and all i have to say is wow, i punched her to the mats and she took off hard and fast and as I'm sitting there watching the road and boost gauge I learned my first lesson about performance boosted engines, if you think the intercooler clamps are tight enough tighten some more or bring tools with, because at 4000 rpm and 15 psi boost in the lines i heard a pop and a whistle followed by a clunk black smoke and stalling, the worst part was pushing her back to the shop :iceslolan

i dunno, 15 seemed like fun for the first rip, if you want embarassing though I gotta go to the ford dealer tomorow for parts for my toyota(spacer to header and spacer to turbo gaskets, the great thing about T3/T4 hybrids is they use a T3 housing which ford used to) I got some other issues to contend with though, the engines now running like crap and burning excessive fuel but hopefully a new coolant sensor and o2 sensor will fix it, I dropped the boost down to 8psi for the first 2000km just to break her in and then after that, well thats my evil secret:grinyes:

i also got into a race with a really cocky sob with a supercharged 2 and he thought he was all cool and fast because he had a pulley on the thing and get this, he believed i had a stock 1.6 still in it, even though if you look down on the trunk all you can see is 2 9" spal fans and a huge intercooler which he thought was the rad:loser: the look on his face when that turbo spooled though was priceless, I love these things they are nuts and fast

thats the link to my members gallery, and yes it was finished for the time being but alas all good things come to an end and so did my fun. My engines sitting on the stand with blown rings and a blown turbo. The stupid center mount throttle body overfed the #3 cylinder and i watched in horror as my precious engine pinned out 17 on the afr gauge. Not all is lost though, a new set of JE's and a new clutch(clutch masters 6 puck ceramic sprung hub center and ductile iron pressure plate) and maybe a set of ferrera stainless steel valves and HKS springs, along with all new ARP fastners, cometic head gasket, accel race bearings and a yonaka gasket kit. I'm also chopping off the factory surge tank off the intake and tigging on my own 4" aluminum surge tank and port matching the intake runners to the disabled TVI-s plate and then that assembly will be port matched to the head. To top it off I will be installing a water-air intercooler and using a ford 5.0L throttle as a end feed so the intercooler will couple directly to the throttle body and sit over the tranny with only enough room for a bypass valve(recirculating blow off). The turbo I have chosen to perform the task of boosting this beast is a GT30R. I will also be redoing the motor mounts and adding torque braces since quarter inch plate still can't hold up to that abuse. I will also be adding a water/meth injection system and bumping the boost level to 23psi........ and i also had a custom licensce plate built for it, it says MK 1 5

Cars are a never-ending project, aren't they? If it's not one thing, it's another. At least you had fun with it before it blew. It sounds like it will be better in the end. That's sweet you are tigging your own custom 4" surge tank. Sounds like your building the motor so and prepping to coupe with the 23psi you want out of the GT30R. That car will be fast as heck!! Keep me posted with info and pics on your project as you continue to work on it.

Ah the long moment of anticipation. I've racked up my visa and now I'm just waiting for my engine to arrive from the machine shop. I decided to build my own completly custom intake and have a brand spanking new water to air intercooler ready to go in. I also got a turbo smart manual boost controller and a turbo smart recirculating bypass valve. My buddy is currently building me a one piece engine hatch and trunk lid to compliment the car and conceal the two 9" spal fan exhaust heat scavenging fans I have. I'm also looking into a decent remote mounted oil cooler and filter pieces to mount it all right to my passenger air duct. The turbo I picked was a GT3076R which should be plenty of fun me thinks. I also had to find a brake master cylinder and can't find anything not even from toyota but I stumbled across a startling discovery. A 92 toyota 4 wheel drive truck shares a similar master cylinder the only difference being that the 2 has a piston size of 7/8" and the truck has a 1" I guess we'll see how she reacts when shes back together, I'll keep you all posted:tongue:

I think I remember reading that about the MC before, for some reason 4 Runner MC is stuck in my head as a larger MC upgrade, which would certainly be in line with what you were saying.
How do you like the Turbosmart MBC? I was looking into that one, a Hallaman, and a Joe P Pro-Z (which I believe is the only dual ball and spring design of the lot, I think the others are single ball and spring).
Nice turbo choice. How do you like the Turbosmart BOV recirced? I bought an HKS SSQV when my OEM BPV went belly up (went we tested it, it was blowing eventhing off). The SSQV is nice. I can run it recirced or vented. I run it vented nowdays, especially since my new intake pipe does not have a nipple to attatch a recirc hose.
That engine lid you mentioned sounds nice. Post up pics when you have them:)

I'm still in the process of building the car since I've get set back a little bit on some things. I've also revamped a little and am using a GT3082R instead of a 3076R the 82 has a GT35 compressor wheel and housing. The intake manifold surge tank is 16" long, 6" wide and 4"tall and I haven't decided if I'm going to use rectangular runners or get round tubing shaped to oval on one end, I'm also building a water to fuel cooler and modifyed a top feed rail off of a 3sge to a 9/16" bore and am running RC 550cc injectors. I figured out the oil cooler bits and everything from the cooler to the filter is actually mounted inside the passenger quarter panel sealed off so all the air goes through the cooler i nstead of bypassing. The only thing thats got me a little off kelter so far is how to cram that turbo in the car with the engine attached to it:grinyes:

the projects coming along slowly but steadily, at this moment in time my interior is gutted out, the floor pans are cut out and templates are made I just have to cut them out of 22 gauge sheet metal, weld them in and coat them, after that the front and rear firewalls are getting cut out, the engine is getting installed and new firewalls built around the engine and Ièm toying around with the idea of a belt driven vacum pump for the brakes and an electric oil pump with a timer to compensate for a turbo cool down(when the engine gets shut off the pump will run for 7 min to circulate oil through the turbo and 30 secs when the key is first turned on) and then Ièll fix the quarters and get her painted and air brushed
