Tune-UP

Just sent in my tax return. I did an e-file so I should get it back in a couple weeks. Does anyone know what a total tune-up costs on the 01 Venture? I have owned it for 2 years and can't remember ever doing one.

Do I need to get a tune-up AND and oil change, or do they do the oil when they do the tune-up?

How many miles on the van? Usually an oil change is separate from a tuneup with an extra charge. The plugs although rated for 100,000 could be replaced starting at around 75 to 80,000 miles. If the plugs are being replaced, I'd also opt for changing the spark plug wires seeing as your van is 7 years old and you are already "in there" doing the plugs. Also replace the air filter if it is dirty or quite some time has passed since it's last replacement. At this time I'd also check your coolant, especially if it's been awhile since it's been serviced.

I was quoted once by our local GMC dealership that it would be between $350.- to $400.- for the whole job (plugs, wires etc.). That's when I decided to do it myself.

What about the coil packs (plug wires attach to) do they wear out, like the old caps & rotors, and should they be replaced at the 100K "tune-Up"?

I don't think so, my 1992 Bonneville is still on it's first coil packs at 260'000 miles with no issues.

I'd wait until a problem might develop with the coil packs. Like shooter_va said above, they tend to last quite awhile. Most I've seen have well over 100K on them. I tend to treat them like any other part ,(sensor, alt, radiator, etc,) and replace them when they go bad .

Thanks guys. I don't have 100k yet, but I'm close to it. I think I'll have the tune-up done when the taxes come in.
