keep breaking nosecone off of starter even after changing flywheels on a 86 305 chevy. i need some suggestions about what to do next:banghead: the motor is a 350 but the starter is off a 305 86 caprice not sure what the 350 came out of it's also in a 64 custom built chevy truck.not using any starter fluid to make it kick backwards. will the timing cause it to break nosecones off?The flywheel is 12.5 in.not sure what size motor the flywheel came guy at junkyard said it was hooked to a powerglide trans and it was a v8.

What is the 305 in, a car or truck? Is it an EXACT match of what came out of the vehicle, is the flywheel the same? Are you using any type of starter fluid, which causes the engine to kick backwards? That will blow the nose cone off any starter.

there are 2 bolt patterns for Chevy starters depending on size of flywheel off-hand I don't remember which goes with which ask a re-builder. You can also try to get ahold of a older cast iron nose from a swap meet and there are starter braces available which takes the weight off the nose piece. some engines from the late 70's need starter shims to set starter depth away from flywheel due to poor quality control when built 12.5= straight across starter nose bolt pattern

14"= staggered bolt pattern
