Timing belt questions

To take the timign cover off or leave it on that is the question?sorry for the shakspeare experience.Lol

Ebay timing belt kits. they seem like good kits that coem with everythign including the waterpump for liek 150???? But would that be equal to an OEM?

Hey I know you guys can't really tell if the belt is ok. But I would jsut liek a few opinions if you guys can tell if it need to be done now or can wait for about 6 months. I know it could be really hard to tell but please any help is appreciated. And I noticed 2 lines in the center of the belt(of the first picture) is that normal or is somehting touching it? (which I doubt)

Why would you take it off? Leave it on

The cover was put there for a reason... To protect a very vital part of the motor. Take it off and you'll be prone to anything getting in there and causing your belt to jump timing. And if your belt jumps timing, you can kiss your valves goodbye...

you risk it bad with those kits. If that belt breaks or slips say by by to your valves

I think you need to turn your macro on first before taking any pictures. The belts are terribly blurry in those pics. Also we cannot tell by just pictures if the belt is worn out or not. You need to check the tension on the belt to determine if it is wore out or not. But, I can say that those marks in it do look like something is rubbing on it. Perhaps something has gotten down in the bottom of the covers? You don't have much clearance at all between the belt and cover. The smallest stone could cause tragic results...

those two lines....they look like they were there since the start since they are so precisely positioned. and the tension is normal. But I can recall lines like that being on other belts but i am not sure. Please someone say it is ok. lol

Do you REALLY need three threads about THE SAME TOPIC at once? Seriously dude, common sense please.

A) Unless you want foriegn shit flying down into your timing belt, leave it on. If for some reason the potential for something to get in there and jump your timing makes you hot, then by all means do it, but I cannot think of one logical reason to spend 106 seconds taking the stupid thing off.

B) Think about it dude, its not that hard. Cheaper materials = cheaper product.

C) I cant tell if your T belt is messed up, but I think there is a pretty good guide in the haynes manual about it. Check it out. If you are that worried about it pay someone to change it.

c) I have done the timing on a 1g before and I wouldnt pay liek 1000 to change a belt.....but dont those lines look legit to you?

Ive had 3 OEM timing belts on my car and none of them had lines down them...

well those lines on the belt are barely noticeable, i just noticed them when i looked into the light.and obviously when the flash went off.

Can you feel the scratches when you rub your nail accross them? If they aren't that deep I would think the belt would be fine. I would just keep an eye on them.

Nevermind, my car is SOHC so it uses a different belt then DOHC, so I cant really compare the two. I dont know what I was thinking at the time of writing that.

I havent worked on or looked at my car is so long, that I think I actually thought in my head that it was DOHC, whoa.

I've had 3 different brands of timing belt and none had those lines.

Buy OEM stuff. Then you can tell your friends that you used the same timing belt that EVO's use.

Ok, so i inspected my belt a little closer and found about 6 tiny cracks about 1mm wide at the edge of the timing belt all on one side?!

Maybe you should just replace it

Yeah i definetly will relace it soon. I just hope it will last a week or two until the belt comes in and I can get in done.

Definitely replace it then... Anytime a belt is getting a crack started, it is done for...
