Im kinda new to racing but Im getting another car soon so I was just wondering what a good base car would be. I need something I can upgrade. I would like it to be sporty also. If anyone has any suggestions they would be very helpful. Also i dont have tons of money so I just need a decent starting car. thx

the "street racing" section is mainly for posting kills and loses.

As for your first car, you need to be more specific. Is this going to be your daily driver? How far is your total distance travel per day? Are you looking for 30+ miles per gallon? Does it have to be 4-dr or 2-dr. Are you considering inexpensive insurance rates? How important is reliability to you? etc...

Simple questions, but are very useful. Being your age not too long ago, I can definitely say to you that getting 35+ mpg was a lifesafer considering how expensive gas was back then. I'm all toyota, so i'll give you some pointers:

corolla ae86
corolla ae92
corolla fx16
supra mk3
mr2 aw11
mr2 sw20
celica gen 5
celica gen 6

These are good starter cars that i consider "sporty compact" or "sport compact". Let me know if you're interested in toyota, i can give you further details.

Good selection of Toyota's there! But now I'm gonna do my little schpiel for Ford:

A good, cheap car that can be made fast easily is a Fox-body Mustang with the 5.0L V8. You can pick one up for really cheap, there are a ton of them out there. Just make sure it's in decent condition.

As far as domestic's go, they are very lightweight, and can be made to handle well with the right suspension mods. Don't let the solid axle turn you off.

There's a TON of aftermarket support for the car, and generally, the parts are cheap. Also, there's a wide knowledge base out there for the car.

The downside though is that it has poor gas mileage. But if you want performance, that's gonna happen with almost ANY car. A good thing to remember is "Horsepower = Money"

like way more specific. mostly, HOW do you want to make the power, and then HOW do you want it delivered?

i'm partial to turbo AWD 4 bangers myself.

I'm just going to copy and paste from the same thread 2 spots down if nobody minds...


I think we are all forgetting the invinsible W-body with the bullittproof 3.8 that can come supercharged from the factory. Its FWD and handles great in the snow and ice.

Plus you can get it in 2 or 4 doors and the aftermarket performance is crazy.... Plus they are a dime a dozen and you can pick them up fairly cheap...

Plus if you get one thats supercharged you can never loose a street race..

Well, to start off mpg isnt really important, I live within 1 mile of school and work. I would prefer a V8 but anything will do. I dont really want a mustang because like someone said theres tons of them around. I mosty just want to race in the streets nothing real serious. I am kinda partial towards eclipse because I already have one, however its automatic. As far as eclipse go I like early modles, 96 or 97.

it was only offered in 96, came with a 4.2 v8 making 270hp, only thing you really have to worry about are the muffler bearings usually need replacing.

yeah and those muffler bearings are expensive since you have to replace them with JDM ones every 30k miles

if you want to mess with eclipses AT ALL, at least get the generations down.

1Ga 6 bolt 90-91
1Gb 7 bolt 92-94
2Ga rounded front end 95-96
2Gb hottest gen w/ tall turbo spoiler 97-99
3Ga non-molded foglights 00-02
3Gb molded foglights 03-05
and then the 4g
i'm sure the 4g has some body changes etc, but i've not been up on that

I was reading an article on the new Eclipse. At one point they mentioned the "Classic established design."

What established design. They are coming up on the fifth redesign, and it ain't even 20 years old yet. Give me a 1gen. I love 'em like that.
