Clutch Fluid Leaking Out !

I had my clutch replaced two weeks ago at 220,000 miles ($495) on my '91
Cherokee 4WD, 4 Liter - straight 6, 5 speed manual.

I kept losing Clutch Fluid and the Clutch Shop Mechanic said he couldn't find
where it was leaking, so he thought it was the Slave Cylinder seal.

The clutch plate was not a goner, but was thin. The slave cylinder was wet
with fluid....(?)

Now two days ago, I lost the clutch in traffic and when I opened the hood, the
clutch cylinder fluid container was empty! It is still leaking out!

No fluid to be seen ANYWHERE!

Not under the pedal on the inside nor anywhere on the firewall by the Master Cylinder,
nor on any of the metal connecting tubes.

That Master Cylinder Fluid Cup holds maybe 3 ounces of fluid!

The Clutch Shop Mechanic looked again, wiped everything off, had me pump
the clutch pedal repeatedly, and no fluid to be seen - again!

So he thinks maybe the tube between the Slave and Master cylinder, which has
a rubber section, is leaking....it is 18 years old - the rubber is probably going bad.

I ordered a new connecting tube for $39 from Spokane Chyrsler and will have
it replaced.

Has anyone had this problem?

I had just left the Freeway when the clutch failed.

I would probably be dead now had it failed on the freeway - there was heavy traffic.!

PS - I am amazed they had the part! 18 years old! And going strong!

Was the slave replaced when you did the clutch?

Seems like you would still see fluid if the rubber hose was leaking.

All the rubber parts should be changed.

The Master Cylinder is dry!

Otherwise I would have had it rebuilt - new ones not available at Chrysler.

Having the entire Master Cylinder Fluid Tank go empty, you would think there
would be a lot of Brake Fluid on something!

We cannot find a drop!

Yes, the Master Cylinder has a rebuild kit (Number 29 in the picture) for $75 or
so at Chrysler....

But no fluid to be seen around it.

Very strange.

BTW - there is no rubber to replace other than the tube I am replacing, the Slave Cylinder
which was replaced with the Clutch Job and the O-Rings inside the Master Cylinder.
