Does anyone know where the timing marks on a 1991 1.8 5 speed jetta are?

Remove the belt cover and the distributer cap and the plug on the bell housing. Install the pulley on the crankshaft temporarily. There is a mark on the crank pulley that should line up with the mark (dot) on the intermediate shaft pulley. The cam pulley mark should line up with the front top edge of the head. Make sure that the rotor is lined up with the distributer #1 cylinder mark (the crank turns two times for each one turn of the intermediate). Remove the plastic plug on the bell housing and make sure the TDC timing mark is lined up with the grove. When you set the tension on the tensioner pulley you can make it tight in both directions. If it rubs the belt cover you went the wrong way. If the belt squeals, you've tightened it too much.
