I have a 97 neon i haven't had too many problems with it but it completely broke down today. I started it normally and i tapped the gas pedal to warm up the engine but the gas pedal stayed down. I tried putting it in drive then hitting the breaks but the breaks wouldnt work. Then I pulled the e-brake and the gas pedal was still down. I finally just turned it off. Now my car won't go in reverse and the only way it drives is if its in neutral. I think its something with the transmission but can it be fixed easily? Can anyone give me any more information on what might be going on or what i could do? Thank you!

When you say the car only drives when it is in neutral, do you mean that the car will move and can be driven, but the lever needs to be in the neutral position? And then when the lever is in reverse, it acts as if it is in neutral? The shifter lever has a cable connected at its bottom end, which runs to the transmission. There is a grommet (plastic I think) that holds the outer covering (sheath) of the shifter cable, located forward of the shifter lever, under the carpet somewhere. If this grommet goes bad, the shifter cable wont move properly when you move the shifter lever. This has happened to other Neons before. You can replace the grommet, or the cable, or both, but it means working in cramped spaces.
I havent heard of a problem with the gas pedal staying down once you took your foot off of it - thats new to me. I would suspect some ice on the throttle mechanism at the throttle body, or something else jamming that throttle cable. Make sure there isnt a fold of the carpet that has gotten in the way where the gas pedal is.
