Pontiac Grand Am Charging Indicator Light

Hi,

I own a 1999 Pontiac GT. The charging indicator light goes on for a few seconds then off every second time I start it up during the day. I've noticed no discernable overhead light issues or driving problems. Could this be just a sensor issue? Does it need to be looked at by a mechanic?

Thanks

depends why the light is coming on. 99% of the time, that light only comes on when there is an internal failure in the alternator and it stops charging.

It is possible to have a wiring issue outside of the alternator, but its not common

The fact that the light is intermittant as you describe is odd. I would at least check the voltage with a voltmeter when the light is on.

Thank you for your reply. Just in the last three months I had both a new starter and battery installed-the alternator was the only part left which could cause this issue. Again, it's a very intermittent light and in the past 6 days it's only come on three times and then went away. I just started my car three straight times in a row, turned my heater fan up three positions and gunned my accelerator and the light never went on. I'm still going to have my mechanic look at it, though.

Thanks again for the advice.

I have a problem with the "service engine soon" light always coming on -- I've had the car serviced and it goes out for awhile but then comes on again. It is still 2K klms. away from another oil change. Could this be a sensor problem?
