04 Cav with the automatic transmission. This is the first vehicle that I have owned with a sealed autotrans. Use to be a rural mailcarrier(100 mile route with 400 stops) and I always installed an external autotrans cooler and changed my fluid/filter every 20,000 miles. Now this car is a daily driver that my wife drives to work. Her commute is 40 miles round trip and 95% interstate driving so the autotrans is not being abused. So is the fluid and filter in these transmissions ready to go for the life of the car or is there a mileage interval that both should be changed? Does Chevy use synthetic ATF in these transmissions? Thanks!

every 30K miles they suggest you do them. Mercon/dextron III but the stores sell V and it supersedes the III.

DEXRON VI supersedes DEXRON III and it is far superior.

I use to drive Dodge Spirits with the tried and true(and VERY reliable)3-speed auto trans. and they came from the factory using ATF 7176 ATF then it went to ATF+3 and when I bought a 2000 Neon with the 3-speed it took ATF+4. Was told it was a fully synthetic fluid. Now I think there out with ATF+6. What was funny with my 95 Ford Explorer the autotrans took Mercon ATF and the power steering took Type F ATF.

GM started using it in production on April 4, 2005 at the Willow Run, MI plant. The announcement to GM dealers was in the early spring that year if I recall correctly. If I can find a copy of the TSB I will post it.

Get the highest DEXRON you can find. I work P/T at advance auto parts. Highest we carry is the V.

Here is an article on DEXRON VI, it says it replaces DEXRON III. Look at the bottle again, I don't think the V refers to the DEXRON spec. If it does specifically say DEXRON V, I would like to know specifically who bottled and labeled the fluid.http://www.imakenews.com/lng/e_article000384801.cfm?x=b11,0,w
Here is some info on Mercon V which says can be used where DEXRON III is required but that is an older spec for DEXRON.http://www.imakenews.com/lng/e_article000564317.cfm?x=b11,0,w
