I am curious, exactialy what all is envolved in making an imported car legal to license and insure in the US? Lets just say that I have found a used R33 V-Spec in Austraila and I want to buy it. After I make arrangements for purchase, what do I have to do before I can have it shipped here so it won't get impounded on the dock?

LOTS and LOTS!
I have researched this myself only to find that it is not something that I can afford right now :(
Well what you have to do is contact an RI... There is only one that I know of willing to convert Skylines. And that one place is Motorex and it will cost you any where form 15-20K for them to convert all nessesary things like the speedo, bumpers, smog system, make sure it is safe Ect....
I am not the most knowledgeable on this subject, but there is someone here who has Imported one himself for track useage...

Familiarize yourself with the name Motorex. They are the main and probably only ones right now that can do all the importation stuff for you.

These are your options:
1) Import 4 GTRs, modify and crash test three of them so that you have the required crash testing information and can comply with DOT/NHTSA regulations. Then, modify the fourth for EPA smog regulations. That could include additional cat's, modified computer etc.
2) Pay Motorex 1.5 million US for the modification information, and become and RI yourself.
3) Pay Motorex the above stated prices (15-20K)and have them covert for you.
Now, I again say, I am not a representative of Motorex, I did not get my GTR from them. But as of today - to the best of my knowledge they are the only RI with the required information to convert GTR's for street use in the US.

It would be best to do the following
1) Go and Pick out the GTR you want in Japan BECAUSE 35% of the GTR's in Aussie ARE STOLEN from HK and Japan and I have found that most of the VIN# have been HACK JOB's
2) talk to GEORGE Sr. 714-545-9503 at G&K conversion They are the ones who do the conversion for import special cars. and are 100% certified ICI
3) Ask them for the Emission sheet of paper that tells you the SPECS on what s is allowed for the GUIDE LINES of Meeting the EPA requirement of the Certification for the TEST BECAUSE you will be FUCKED if you buy a Modded car and it Fails the Emission test and that means you will need to take off all the Modded parts and replace them with the stock parts to make it pass the EPA test.
when I mean ask them for the EPA paper this will tell you what are the requirements for
a- cold start emission test
b- Rolling dyno emission test of 15mph and 25mph test
c- Idle emission test
d- 1500~3000rpm tail pipe emission test
and while in Japan you can get this done by any LEGAL DEALER because they are supposed to give this information to the buyer of the car it really does make sense to do this prior to importing the car because if it does not meet these tests you can say your FUCKED with a CAR OVER HERE AND it will cost you an $$$$$ to make the motor stock so it would be best to get A STOCK GTR SKYLINE from an old person or a Reputable DEALER in Japan or NEW R34 from Nissan Japan.
if the shop or dealer that wont do this , then you can say you have saved $$$$$$$ and a TON of FUCKEN problems
send this information over to G&K and They will tell you if its acceptable or not .
------------------------------ SHIPPING ----------------------------------------
Shipping from Australia to the USA
its $2900 for a 20ft container from
Melbourne to Los Angels
+
add 2.5 % import duty tax on the Invoice value of the car
+
Custom broker fees $
+
Container discharge fee
+
Where house cross-dock fee
+
Trucking from the Where house to G&K automotive
Now should you want a GTR for racing that is a Different storie
Don’t pull a fast one saying your going to import a car for racing and then drive it on the street because them DOT will be watching you very closely.

The GTR is still rather popular in Japan. Last time I looked over there it was a bit of a mission to find the one I would want.
