Evap System

Just found out I have a problem with my evap system (97 Grand Prix GTP). My SES light comes on intermittently. Not sure what the number of the code is, but my mechanic said it was because the vacuum was too strong (not a leak). He said could be from a kink or clogged hose. Any ideas what this could be? Are the hoses and canister easily accessible for me to check?

Here are the common evaporative emissions system DTCs at the link below. To help we need the DTC (code) so post it if you have it.

The vent solenoid and evaporative cannister are located at the rear driver's side of the car. You have to look up from underneath in the proximity of the rear fenderwell area.

Thanks, Bob. I was in a bit of a hurry and forgot to ask my mechanic for the number of the code.:banghead: I will try to find out on Monday.

The code was on my receipt. It's 1441B. I found one page that lists this code as "P1441 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Flow During Non-Purge."

For whatever it is worth, I had a similar problem with a different code. My code was 441. Here is the link. Apparently I have a different evap system than the later 97 models. Yours may or may not be like mine.

Good point jem270 so other members don't get confused with the slight differences in the evaporative emission systems between the years. The system you have should be applicable to all '97 to '98 GTP, GT and SE (3800). It changed to where the tank pressure switch was moved to the fuel pump pod in the 1999 model year.
What I have for extended odb-ii DTC P1441 is a purge solenoid stuck open. So that component is a possibility. The switch vacuum state should toggle low (closed) if there is no vacuum applied to the system.

Thanks for the link, jem270. The pictures are great and I've got a better grasp on the system now.

Is there any way for me to test the purge solenoid, or does it require diagnostic tools?

Technically, a GM Tech II scan tool is required to easily and properly test the purge solenoid. For DIY, you can check the evaporative emissions and vacuum lines to it (input and output), PCM 5 volt low reference signal at input of the electrical connector with a DMM and the output. Other option would be to replace the purge solenoid outright with no additional troubleshooting but no guarantee that will resolve the issue.

Thanks, Bob. Looks like the solenoid is a pretty cheap part, so I'll probably just replace it.

Can i bypass the evap system? If so how?
