I have a silly question: The third from last photo of the alcantara headliner has a control panel of some sort near the right door opening. Does anyone know what it is? I've never seen that in any other F1 pictures. Then again, I only see ocasional headliner shots.

It's a frequent location used for things like custom fitted radar detectors or possibly additional audio control equipment. I don't recognize the device fitted, but given this car comes from the device capital of the world (Japan) it could be many different things I think. There was nothing placed there originally in the F1s. Not a silly question at all. :)

I can't believe anyone would pay that much. Me thinks they'll sit on the car for a while and then put it up on the auction block getting less than a buyer would've bought beforehand (like #014).

It's not too bad (for the seller), giving the current exchange rate.
I heard the car was already sold before it came to the US, but I'm not sure how reliable that info is as its a new contact for me.

According to zonda16, yes:
It will remain in the U.S. not sure what state but it will go straight from Texas to the owner.
Hopefully the new owner isn't one of the lock-it-in-the-garage types. For a car that has already seen quite a bit of use, a little more certainly won't harm its value. The federalization process, although easier with the car being built pre-1996, will still take several months - maybe it will be done in time for some of the large summer events out here.

Interesting. I wonder who federalizes in Texas. I've always thought that Ameritech would get most of those, as they did the initial seven (from the R&T cover car on) in the U.S. There is also a company here in Baltimore that has done a few Porsche 959's, but I figured many did not survive the end of the "grey market" days. But that was a fast sale.

If the car is going to Texas, this is where it will end up. They've done a few F1s in the past and are the only Registered Importer that I know of in Texas:

Amerispec was actually the name of the company that did the original 7 F1s. They called the cars "Ameritech F1s" to go along with the idea they were the manufacturer instead of McLaren. They have long since been out of the business of converting cars, and may have only done one or two F1s under the new 'Show or Display' rule besides the 7 they did prior to that.
J.K. Technologies is likely the company in Baltimore you mentioned. They've converted a few F1s as well. I am actually surprised the car didn't go to G & K Automotive here in Santa Ana, CA as that would have been a lot more convenient, especially if the car will remain here on the west coast when finished.
As Greg mentioned the Kenwood Calendar photos were of chassis #002. We know this because those same photos were used in a softcover book published by Autocar called "McLaren's Road Car - F1" which was printed when only #002 had been completed and clearly identified the car in the photos as such.

Were they a fledgling company when 042 was purchased? I.e., I'm guessing they had just started or weren't around and that's why 042 was federalized in Conn. and then driven to Texas. Then again, if it were me and I didn't have to worry about the mileage restrictions of Show & Display, I'd happily do that drive in an F1. :smokin:

True, true; I forgot this. :banghead: Per AutoWeek's 1/8/01 issue, the first car to be approved under Show and Display was Gary Bartlett's XJ220, followed by Bryan Milazzo's 959, with S&D first becoming law on 7/14/99. Oh Forty-Two graced the pages of R&T in Dec. 97. Will have to reread that AutoWeek article (in fact, I'll try to scan and post it soon). I am guessing that after it became law, all F1s brought into the U.S. had to fall under show & display, yes?

You could bring one in temporarily under the HS-7 form if you are a non-resident:
A vehicle registered in another country may be imported for personal use for a period not to exceed one year. The vehicle cannot be sold and it must be exported within one year from the date of entry. Your passport number and country of issue are required on the HS-7 form. Use Box 5 on HS-7 form.
The only F1 I know of that was imported post rule changes without going through the federalization process for Show or Display exemption was eventually confiscated by US Customs. The owner was charged with various crimes related to the importation and while he was not convicted, the car was eventually exported once the trial had finished. You can read some of the details here:
Thomas Wieringa trial about to begin (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=566325)
Or search our forum on the owner's last name for other discussions about chassis #069.
I look forward to seeing the AutoWeek article you mentioned.

Scanned it this afternoon, and here is the link. Just read the trial articles. I'm glad he won. The first Acura NSX brought to this country was a pre-production version for the car mags to test. Even though it was historically significant, U.S. govt. still sent it to valhalla. Of course, the McLaren is in another universe as far as rarity, but it wouldn't have surprised me if things headed in that direction. Glad things went the way they did for Wieringa. Anyhoo, I've always found this AutoWeek article very informative.

Wow, and I thought you'd seen it all? Will probably scan up some other rare articles and place them in the scans thread.

And here are some pics of it in the BMW Garage (at Woodlands, TX?), where it tried to get federalization and allegedly failed on emissions

Wow, do you have any more details about it being in The Woodlands? I'm from there, and even though I live in NYC now, I find it bizarre and fascinating that an F1 passed through. Was it BMW Houston North, and why there?

I believe both cars are located at the service center not the showroom in La Jolla. I will stop by later to confirm.

Both cars are here but no pics. Hopefully they’ll transport them to the showroom sometime soon. Did Peloton25 (Erik) make it down?

Poking around last night and came across this link:

Pics were taken at Wallace Labs around June 4th 2008, not 1/31/2005 as the EXIF image details show. Not the greatest images we've ever seen, but you can click on the image twice for high res versions.
