today i test drove a 97 GST manual trans and minor mods.. .. my main concern was while letting the car warm up noticed that there is no "stopper" on 2nd... it just tries to go in without touching the clutch and grinding..

Now when driving the car there is no smooth transition from 1st to 2nd... it always gives a quick grind before entering??? what could be a couple reasons for this? and is it an expensive fix?

Could be the throw out bearing going back or bad syncros. Either way you're going to have to drop the tranny.

What do you mean by stopper? I can technically put my car in any gear without hitting the clutch (only done with it off).

Im going to guess the syncros are going out on 2nd. I can shift without the clutch to. As long as you dont try to slam the gears without pushing the clutch there is really no harm.

yeah when the car is on they have "stoppers" all except for 2nd it just tries to go in and it grinds.

RPM shifting is easy and usually if done right there will be no grinding. If 2nd is important to you but you dont have the finances for a rebuild just take 1st up to about 4000 rpm and then push it down into second firmly and eventually it will find the sweet spot and pop right in and keep going.

I dont recommend you shifting with out the clutch. While its not really bad for the tranny IF done properly. If you dont do it right it could screw up your tranny. A little grinding isin't going to hurt anything really, but if your shifting right it shouldn't grind at all.
