1991 jetta timing broke, replaced now won't start!

i have a '91 jetta 1.8 manual, the timing belt broke so i had a buddy put the new timing belt on seeing as i don't know how to set them. when he was finished i went to start the car, but it wouldn't do anything! any suggestions? :banghead:

does it at least turn over? does it have compression in all four cylinders?timing marks correct?

Rotate the engine so that it is top dead center (The wedge on the flywheel should line up with the wedge on the bell housing). Make sure the mark (line or dot, I don't remember) on the cam shaft are even with the edge of cylinder head. Make sure the rotor is pointing to the number one spark plug. The crank turns 2 times for each one turn on the distributer. It's easy to have the distributer off 180 degrees.
