98 ford explorer

I have a 1998 ford explorer, it runs great but has a loud knocking noise from the motor, I dont know what it is, and have had people tell me to buy a engine rebuild kit, to save my motor, does anyone know where I can buy one for a reasonable price..

You probably should get it professionally diagonsed before going the rebuild route. Depending on the sound, it could be something like a loose water pump or a stuck valve, neither of which would require a complete rebuild.

with a loud knocking noise you might have a loose timing chain tensioner. That happened to me.

I know most engine rebuilding kits cost around $1000. For just a few hundred more you could get a long block which contains rebuilt heads, new pistons and rings, cam and lifters, main and rod bearings, reground crank, timing chain with gears and a new oil pump. Most long blocks have everything except the intake, exhaust and accessories. Most are guaranteed for 3 years or 36k. An engine from the boneyard is an alternative. Most guarantee that their used engines will burn no oil. Expect to pay around $500.
