sti or evo

i think the sti is gonna kick some ass. sorry to say it but you will get 2.5 liters of displacement on that 300hp to start with did i mention more displacement. as long as the head isnt restricted like on the ej20 engine then it should be a bolt on beast. the 2.0 ports are rathar small compared to a 4g63 motor. but we will see. i wonder what the stock quarter mile time will be.

while i do agree withg you to some extent, i think the EVO and STI will still be very close in times but the STI will weigh a hefty amount more and I think the 2.5 will be just a sorry but successful attempt by subaru to out power the EVO..... subaru count compete with the EVO in a 2.0 class so they had to make their rngines rally illegal to 2.5......but dont just go out and buy an STI cause its more power, i think mitsu has an ace up their sleeve and my guess its the ralliart extreme EVO which is faster then any S202 or 22B impreza.

You might be getting 300ho and 300ft/lb but you are also going to be paying 33,000 dollars base price. the tests will tell all.

I dunno...I read the comparo done in CAR and the STi is faster..0-60 in 4.6 while the EVO VIII takes 5.3 seconds...so it's got it on the launch and since it will have more HP...it will keep pulling...

In Japan, they compete 2004 WRX STI with only 2003 EVO VII and the EVO beat WRX STI with no sweat. Every one in motorsport industry knows that these two manufactures are the two Japanese well known with their Rally Car industries. However, the North American Subaru was cheating and not in accordance to WRC (World Rally Car) rules. All WRC has to be 2.0 L engine Maximum. The Evo always maintain this standard with his potent 2.0 L Turbo-I4 and reaching 278-280bhp. However WRX STI North America model cheating by 0.5L as they are using 2.5L Boxer turbo engine and even though, so unfortunate that STI only reaching 300bhp on the paper (probably the same 280 on the dyno test). You can ask any mechanic or professional driver that known these two manufactures and I guarantee you that without any doubt, Mitsubishi will be pronounced as a leader in the 4 cyclinder class world calibre. In Asia, Australia and Europe, Evo also known to be the most potent and the most stabil compact sport car and rally compatible human ever created. Furthermore, we have not talked about the New Evo MR as yet.

What does that have to do with the US models?
However, the North American Subaru was cheating and not in accordance to WRC (World Rally Car) rules. All WRC has to be 2.0 L engine Maximum.
Why would they want to stay in WRC rules for the US STi when there is no WRC in the US? They were worried about building a fast car, not building a car to compete in a race you'd have to ship the car halfway across the world just to get to. If saying it's cheating is your way of helping you sleep at night knowing the STi is more powerful than the EVO, then have at it.

The JDM STi will not make 280hp on a dyno, and neither will an EVO. A US STi will get there if not very close. Do you know what you're talking about?
And what exactly is "so unfortunate" about 300hp? That must make the EVO even more unfortunate to be only 280 hp, right?

I would rather have a regular EVO than the MR.
"Furthermore", we haven't talked about the STi RA-C or 22b yet either ;)

Well, I work on a professional race team, and I bought an STi over the EVO. As far as the 4-cyl engine thing, I'd say Honda makes the best production 4-cyl engines from an engineering perspective (see Honda S2000). It's relatively easy to get more power from a turbocharger, and Porsche made a NA 240 HP 4-cyl production engine in the early 90's. If you want to restrict it to 2.0L turbocharged engines, it's pretty well recognized that Peugeot has the best WRC engine now, and has for a while.
I have nothing against the EVO, I think that they are great cars...just not quite as good as the USDM STi. For future reference, I'd reccommend only posting clams that you can back up.

I think it's almost cheating that the Subaru uses a boxer engine, similar TYPE of engine used by Porsche, notice I didn't say they were similar, just similar type. Anyway, if anything, Subaru should be pushing better numbers than they are, but the AWD causes a lot of drive-train loss in power.

what is it cheating using a boxer engine, or adding .5L of displacement on a street car??? power is power no matter how it's made. if it takes .5L more to make that power, so be it, if not that's great. if it takes horizontally opposed piston design as opposed to 90/60 degree design, then that's great. the Sti's and Evo's you see on the road here in the US are built for the street, with the inspiration of a rally race car. not vice versa. sure you can use them for rally races but like ldelaysionl said, rally racing in the US? c'mon people. you can say a similar thinga bout the viper, the viper cheats because it has 2 more cylinders than top fuel drag racers use.

Well, don't take my terminology to heart like that, I don't have anything against it, the only point I am making is that it should be even better than it is, and I know with the correct modifications it is. So don't get your panties all in a bunch. :p

hey they have a rally in mexico now!!! thats getting closer :uhoh: and they may not have the WRC in the US but i assure theres an active US SCCA (or equivalent) rally circuit.. but enough on that...
all this EVO junk you're reading about is true... but its not about the current EVO... its about the smaller faster older versions from about the VI and before.. the VII and the VIII are crap compared to older versions.. sorry
mistu's just now gettin back into the game with the MR which is waaay better then a regular EVO btw (6spd, front LSD, and an ACD plus its a little faster too) but still not quite up there with the STI Spec C
lol using a boxer motor is cheating? yeah just like N/A guys say using a turbo is cheating and just like everybody who doesnt use nitrous says thats cheating too
peugeot may have a good motor but that really doesnt do much when the drivetrain cant get it to the ground :grinno:
oh and the STI only gets about 264 of its 300hp to the ground which sounds really bad but its the price you pay for AWD..

well i wasn't directing that towards you only. but mraquinas as well.
in all honesty, the Sti and Evo are so evenly matched that nitpicking these rather miniscule differences between the two is kinda pointless. but makes for good conversation. it'll all boil down to the driver. in the real world, there's no such thing as "all things being equal". one driver will always be better and worse than his/her opponent, one car will always have at least one advantage and disadvantage over the other. i just have a bias towards the Sti only coz there's one in the family :p. not doggin the Evo, it's fast and all and i've driven one. and to be honest, i'd never buy either myself but if i had to, i'd go for the Sti.

HALLELUJA!!!!!!!!
It's these SMALL differences that led me to choose the STi over the EVO. They are both great cars, it's just that the STi works better FOR ME and what I do with the car.
As for the nit-picky categorizations, I'll freely admit that the EVO is BY FAR the best 4 door car available in North America with an inline 4-cyl turbocharged motor and stock carbon fiber rear wing that's under $40,000 new.

I always try to say that but someone is usually like "but dude, this car is a tenth faster". For all practical purposes these 2 cars are equal. And even if I have to wait until I can get 10 year old used models, I will have one of each in the garage some day

The 4G engine has been around for a decade, getting power out of it is much easier than the STI. The parts and knowledge base are already out there, its easy and cheap to make the EVO fast. And the EVO already outperforms the STI stock for stock.

And the EVO already outperforms the STI stock for stock.
See what I mean
The STi is faster than the EVO in a straight line stock for stock, and some people have found the STi to be faster around a track than the EVO. It depends on your personal driving style and which car matches it better. Just because you read in a magazine that one car beat the other doesn't mean you should take it as the 100% repeatable truth.
If you want to get picky, the EVO comes with stickier tires than the STi. That alone could mean a several second difference. The EVO also has a more aggressive suspension and alignment settings. That could be another second or 2 there.
In the real world and not in magazine land, these cars are equal.

The 4G engine has been around for a decade,
Meaning it's 10 year old technology. Engine developmnet and design have come a long way in the last 10 years.
getting power out of it is much easier than the STI.
Again, only because it's new technology. Just because you haven't seen it yet doesn't mean that (1) it's not out there and (2) there won't be bigger gains possible.
The parts and knowledge base are already out there, its easy and cheap to make the EVO fast.
Easier and cheaper, right now, yes, but with the same development time, it is very possible that the STi will have equal, or bigger, potential gains from the same modifications.
And the EVO already outperforms the STI stock for stock
These cars are so close that I have read magazines that show both better than the other. As ldelaysionl so eloquently put,

well...
let's just keep an old thread going.
how old do you think the boxer design is?
how old is the ej20, specifically?
at least as old as the 4g63.
the 4g63 in the evo is also very different in alot of respects from the older dsm motors, so it's not an "old" design.
350 small block chevy. basically 50 yr old design. and can still kick your ass.
