The car has 83000 miles on it. Toyota changed the water pump in March of 07 at 72000 miles. Since then we noticed a whiring noise from under the hood. Over time it had gotten worse untill we brought it in last month and they replaced the drive belt tensioner. The noise is still there. The car is going back this week for the same complaint. Any thoughts?

See if you can locate the noise with a stethescope. If it's in the timing belt housing, I'd guess it was the water pump. May be the alternator.

Toyota just gave us the word on the noise. It's the intake manifold and they'll be glad to fix it for $600. They say you can drive the car with no problem, just have to put up with the noise. Thanks.

Not that this will do you any good but here's a little back ground info:http://www.jasperengines.com/pdf/Toyota24EngineNoiseTB.pdf
There is a service bulletin out on your noise issue. It's Toyota # 01804 and NHTSA # 10008384 issued 3 June 04. Unfortunately the narrative wasn't there. It would tell you if the warranty was extended to cover it or not. Might ask your dealer.
