MkIII VW Jetta WIP

This is some very early experimentation on a new piece I'm working on. It's a friends MkIII Jetta. a couple of his cars have been the subject of some of my other work and as his car undergoes some changes, I like to create some new work reflecting it.

In this piece I'm concentrating on some new markers. I've always used PrismaColor but I'm trying out some new Copic markers as well as the Copic airbrush system. I'm happy with it so far, but I need to order some new colors to better match the car and other markers I already have.

Anyway, I'm not super happy with these particular images so far, but am definitely excited to get this one finished, so stay tuned.

Looks like you have mastered the technique well, it's the inspiration to watch these WIPs. Good luck with it, it will be awesome judging from these pics. The side-view picture is stunning, I just don't get this way of sketching, so clean and so sharp :D A little question, what are you using as a masking tape for airbrush? I want to try it sometime in future.

hey thanks for the comliments. I think I went a bit overboard with the airbrush on the windows, but I am getting the hang of it with practice. I really want to get good at using it to layer colors on the body to show reflection in the paint, especially on darker colored cars.

For masking, I use something called frisket film. It comes in a roll and I just cut off pieces as I need them. It works really well because it is adhesive but not really sticky like tape. Even better than architects tape in my experience. So you can lay a whole sheet out over your work, and then lightly cut it out with a fresh x-acto blade. be careful though not to press to hard and cut into your drawing. Thats the only drawback, but with a little practice, it is easy to over come and get the hang of.

Well, I finally finished it. I've been so busy with work, wedding planning, and house hunting :banghead: Finally made some time to wrap this one up. I'm fairly happy with it, especialy for my first work with some new equipment. But its definitely not perfect. Here are some crappy cell phone pics. the last image is almost the final version. added some highlights and touch up, so hopefully I'll get to a decent scanner tonight and have a final image for you tomorrow.

enjoy:biggrin:

some more practice
