Longest time driving

Okay, I'm back from my weekend of driving. (For those of you who didn't even notice I was gone ;) )

On Saturday, I sat in DC traffic for over an hour and a half

But it led me to wonder, after I had spent 8.5 hours sitting in a car with only one out-of-car break, what is the longest period of driving time anyone else here has put in?

And just sitting as a passenger in the car doesn't count. If you split driving duties, just count your time. :)

About 9 hours. It was on the way home from my honeymoon in Monterey. We left Monterey about 7pm (the sun was still up), and got home about 5am. I'll estimate about an hour for Denny's in San Luis Obispo.

Now, I must add: This was all in her ECHO, and it was on Highway 1 out of Monterey, so we were averaging 35mph in the switchbacks on the side of a cliff overlooking the ocean. That is a hard drive.

Yes, Highway 1 is treacherous...

I was just out in CA for a wedding in July, and we drove somewhere up north from Santa Rosa mostly along Highway 1...

I drove 8.5 hours (including the time spent in traffic) and still doing anywhere between 65-80 mph!!!!

When I was stationed in SoCal, I would make the 10 hour drive home, once a month. That was always fun.

About 5 hours in a row is about the most i have spent driving at once.

I like to stop and get out often and have a walk around etc.

Our country is not huge so you can get to most places in a few hours.

6 hours straight, no breaks. This is why I now make sure that whatever trip I make, I only drive for one hour tops.

Iv driven non-stop for about 6hrs, with a single break in the middle for 9hrs.
But Iv driven the Truck for 14hours, thats stopping at about 100odd shops on the way round though, so its not resting.

Non stop was about 11 hours from here to Wayne County IL. The longest drive I did in a day was to Swift County MN from here which was 15 hours. Only stopped once for food and gas. What a long ass drive that was.

How can you sit in a car for 11hours straight?
Didnt your legs goto sleep?

I was pretty young then. I dont think I could pull that off now. Anything more then four or five hours and I am about done.

I drove from my home in New Brunswick, to here in Barrie Ontario for college, a 15 hour drive, but stop about 3 times for gas and food, and stayed overnight in a hotel at the 10 hour mark.

I only took one break on my trip, for gas and a pit-stop... it took about a half hour because I had to eat then, as well... eating and shifting do not go well together, as I have discovered.

Oh, and Heep: About my 80 mph... I maxed at 85, but I'm sure I could have gone higher. I decided to stop at 85 so if I got caught, it wouldn't be a high-speed felony (which is anything 20+ mph over the posted limit). :D

Did you drive all the way to CA from PA??   that would be crazy! they're like totally opposite of each other... from like top right to bottem left of the U.S. that's CRAZY!

the longest i drove without stoppin was just like 4 hours when i was driving to Detroit and there was heavy traffic..... i need to get out of the car every like 2 hours atleast
the longest drive with stopping i did was probably to New York that took about 9 hours

it's going to be longer this commin summer though, cause me and my boyz are drivin down to Florida for like a week or so, for a road trip...
i'm thinkin about mardi gras too :D :D

Nah, GS... I flew out to Cali, but I drove the roads in an *automatic* Rustang at night... That was fun!!!

I only had one lesson on a standard before I went out there, so I wasn't allowed to drive my aunt's manual Jetta... which would have been fun going up and down and up and down and round and round we go!!!

i've done that before, i just went for a cruise then ended up driving to Toronto for no reason, just to drive around there :) but T-dot is only an hour away from me... not 7 hours!

i think i'm gunna do that and go to detroit one of these days, instead of toronto :) that'll be a good 3 hour waste of time to get there

i've been to detroit before... i just try to stay in the better areas and always had my windows up

but i felt adventurous one day with 2 of my friends, so we brought hooded sweatshirts with us. I rolled down the windows, i was playin some hip hop, and we put on the hoodies to look all bad... and cruised through some ghetto place, there were like boards on windows :D some people looked at us like we were drug dealers... that was fun :D

till i saw a group of black guys lookin at us... probably talkin about us bein white boys :D that's when i decided to get the hell outta there!

The area around Troy and stuff is a lot nicer. BTW, if you're in that area, look for a dealership called "Auto Europe." I LOVE that place...they import euro home market cars like Elises and Alfas and stuff, and they usually have a ton of Porsches and cool stuff. They had a couple Caterham 7's when I was there, including the one that Car & Driver built a few years ago.

you should have quoted it, i didn't know what you were talkin about, hehe :)

but that's impossible, think about it 23 hours! to california. Ontario, canada is only a little bit closer than NYC or phily... that's like driving from one part of the U.S to the complete opposite, not just accross the country but from bottom left to top right!!! that's like 3000 miles atleast! (just a guess)

there's no way somebody could do it in 23 hours, it would take that long to get to like Florida from ontario.. florida is ALOT closer :D

Heep
10-19-2001, 07:25 PM
Of course it's possible, going the right speed :D, although it does seem unlikely. But might I remind you that Ontario streches west quite a ways

yeah like thunder bay.... that's even farther :) cause it's up farther north

i think the quickest would be through detroit, through the tip of the so called "golden triangle" of ontario :)
and that would still take like a week!!
like that's farther than driving to vancouver or somethin..... waaaaay farther

According to Mapquest, it's 2530 miles from Toronto to Bakersfield, and 27--something miles from Toronto to Vancouver...

if B.C. is straight to the left, and california is down to the left, wouldn't it be farther to go down and left, instead of straight left

Darkwing
10-20-2001, 01:04 AM
man, you all drive too much, longest I ever spent driving was 30 min. From school home in rush hour traffic. That's it for me. You all are just as crazy as my dad. He drove for 2 weeks straight driving a truck for his co. from calif. to Ohio, back to Ariz. and then to florida, then back to Calif. A few stops I'm sure, but not more than an hour.

Just plain crazy to me.

The west coast goes diagonal, not straight down. Vancouver is a lot further west than all of California...

i know it's diagonal, it's farther going diagonal than straight down or straight left that's what i mean

i thought that california is just as far west as B.C.

okay anyway, so it's 2530miles.... let's see somebody drive that far in 23 hours!!!! that's what i'm getting at!! :D

but anyway that's not my point anymore.... you said it's 2530miles to bakersfield from Toronto. Now i'm saying there's no way the guys could have driven that far in 23 hours

Heep
10-20-2001, 07:31 PM
Sorry, the map is a little primitive :D:D

But I get and agree with your point. Well, sort of. They can do it, just not legally. 110 mph the whole way works out right

without running into ANY traffic, and without getting pulled over once in 2530miles in a mini-truck?
no way in hell, hehe

that still wouldn't work.... look how far it is. They would have to be driving over 110mph for 2530miles straight, without running into ANY traffic, and without getting pulled over that whole time going that fast

that my friend, is impossible :D

Not really. They need to average 110 mph. 150 mph bursts help a lot.
