Ok. here's my dilemma. I have a 91 S-10 with a 4.3 V6 in it now. i just got a 95 LT-1 350 that i plan on swapping in once it warms up and it gets a fresh rebuild. What my question is..... What camshaft can i use with 1.6 or rocker arms to get right around 275 - 300 hp or maybe a little more without doing too much to the fuel system? basically this is a budget truck. i already ordered headers and i'm gonna make my own cold air intake. i'm also getting 2.5 inch flowmaster exhaust from a friend that he doesn't need anymore dirt cheap. I don't mind spending a little extra money but i dont wanna dump 2 or 3 grand in to the motor. im not sure what the duration and lift numbers mean so please, if you can help, explain what they are? i would like to use the factory pushrods if possible, but if not it's no big deal. Im in no hurry to get the motor finished but i would like to have it in by mid summer. It's not the first time i've rebuilt a motor but the first time i've ever done anything with different camshafts. ANY ADVISE WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, lift is how far the valve opens, but you also have to account for pushrod length and rocker size, and how much clearance the valve has from top of piston when fully open(this is just the basics). don't have the exact formula in front of me to figure this out at the moment, but you should be able to find that pretty easy. cam lift example...hope i get this right, am kinda tired.
intake:
0.525" lift with factory rocker arms.(think they are 1.5). this means with factory pushrods and rockers, the valve opens just over 1/2 inch. with the 1.6 rockers, it may make it around 0.565" lift(just a guestimate on the number). when i say factory pushrods and rockers, they may be aftermarket, but of same size.
Exhaust:
if has same lift, then equals same amount of opening and so on. lower number is less opening, higher number is more opening.

duration is how long it stays open in relation to camshaft position/crank/piston position as they are connected to each other by timing chain...remembering that the crank turns twice as fast as cam.

advertised duration is what it is called, but you can degree a cam to get exact duration. a quick example for the numbers.
intake:
218 intake duration, means that the valve is open for 218 degrees of CAM rotation, remembering that the cam goes half as fast as crank.

exhaust:
228deg, meaning is open for 228deg of CAM rotation. there is a little bit of overlap for idle stability and so on, not so much ina cam for a forced induction engine(turbo/blower), as that would leak boost.

the numbers above i pulled from a "hot cam" for an LT4 corvette engine, but are for example ONLY. I don't want to shy you away from doing the mods, but then there is also intake, carb/throttle body to make the engine breath for the new cam, and get the more fuel if needed, if the valves/valve springs can take it, and so on. if you go for a slightly larger cam than you have now, this may not be much of a factor. what is your main goal, low end torque, high end power? there are some people who can rattle off specs for that motor, and have built enough of them for some power that can just give you a list of what to get, i can't do that. having reuilt motors before will certainly help you out in the knowledge of installing the parts, but chosing the parts will be a little trial and error without a "list". i know i didn't answer your question on what cam to use, but i hope i helped out in the general info you were looking for. since you have all winter to ponder this in your head, why not buy a book or 2 about modding the 5.7's. there are plenty out there, and will help you find the right areas to look at as for as what parts. i would gladly spend $30-$50 on books to learn stuff that would keep me from spending $1000 on stuff that won't work too good together. this is alot to think about, but i think you are on the right track having time to think about it, and asking for help. there is a wealth of knowledge here, and most don't mind sharing it at all! keep us posted!

Basically i want alot of torque. The only thing that i dont wanna change is i wanna keep it fuel injected since im gonna drive it daily. the LT4 hot cam was one i'm considering for the swap. a guy for Summit tech told me that i would pretty much have to change everything execpt the roller rockers if they were in excellent shape. so i figured maybe i'll go a little bigger than what i had originally planned. I was fiddling around pricing intakes, throttle body spacers, and other performance parts. Since i'm in no big hurry to get this project done i'll have alot of time to put a little bit of money into it here and there. However i don't need a 10 second truck. it's gonna be a slow project but it shoudl be worth it when it's done.

picked up the motor yesterday. But it wasn't the one that i intended to get. I showed up at the junkyard and told them i was hear for the motor and the guy said he had sold it already. AFTER I HAD TOLD HIM THE WEEK BEFORE THAT I WAS COMING THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY TO PICK IT UP!!!!!!!!! the motor had just over 100K on it and sounded pretty good for sitting in a junkyard for who knows how long. But anyways i ended up getting another LT1 from a 92 caprice classic. Still an LT1, just a different intake, the throttle body being on top instead of in front of the intake. So with a little time we got the motor running before we pulled it out and it too ran pretty well. the odometer had 88,000 on it and i paid significantly less for it so i guess i have really nothing to complain about. After tax the motor came to $264. I plan on replacing all the gaskets, bearings, the oil and water pumps, basic tune up, and the coil, just be be sure that i don't have to do it 100 miles down the road.
