Sup everyone, im a new here, and i dont think i kno enuf about cars. And i wanna get to learn more about the engine (the skyline's in particular) and the functions of different parts, and things i could do to make cars faster. Anybody here know a site or sumthing that lets you learn all this stuff?

well from the R32 to the R34 Nissan used the RB26DETT. if you want to know how a car works inside out check out How Stuff Works (http://www.howstuffworks.com/), to make a car go faster theres 2 roads you can take. one of them is NA(natural aspiration) tuning, NA tuning generally requires alot of internal work and have a higher compression ratio, nitrous also fits into this catagory. the other one is FI(force induction) which forces more air through the intake. there are 2 forms of FI, a Super Charger is driven directly off the crank and theres the Turbo Charger which is driven by the exhaust.

Welcome to the board...
If you want to learn about the Skyline, you may also want to check out www.gtr.co.uk .
Key aspects of the R34 GT-R:
-ATTESA ETS to equally split torque between all for wheels.
-Super HICAS PRO to turn the rear wheels by a matter of inches.
These electronics, including the AWD as well, and the luxurious conolly leather interior, make the Skyline weigh in at 1600kgs.
-Perfect 50 : 50 weight distribution (very few cars have this; ten time more expensive cars sometimes don't even have this).
-Lightweight speakers, aluminium body panels.
-The engine (RB26DETT) is pretty much bomb proof. Made out of iron, it has ceramic Garrett turbochargers, and a whole load of great engineering.
To make the car faster:
-Like said, FI and NA are the key.
-Engine cooling.
-Improving airflow - the engine does need to breathe more easily.
The skyline is an I6 platform. A damn fine one at that, too...

Skyline was first introduced at 4 door model at 1957. This would be a 1st gen skyline. Skylines are made as 4 door model cars. Nissan was one of the first companies to introduce the 4 door sporty cars. 2 door was made later generations to make it bit more sporty.
Also, the 4valve DOHC turbo was only first introduced to japan and to 6th generation skyline at 1983. So skyline was all NA engines until then. But this doesn't mean that all their engines became turbo. Many are still NA. The popular RB20 series engine was introduced at 7th generation along with HICAS system at 1985(All wheel steering, nissan is claiming that they are the first one to introduce this system...not sure if this is legit though)
1964 was what made skyline legendary. At 2nd japanese grand prix at suzuka circuit, the skyline actually passed the prototype porche 904GTS at the hairpin curve and took the lead for a moment. You think this is not really a big deal but picture this - that porche was made specially for the race, but the skyline was the production model. The porche weighted about 1625LB, while the skyline weighted about 2750lbs. After this race, they won 45 japanese races in the row to claim their legend.
Skyline is now at 11th generation and we are all waiting how the GTR is going to be...lots of expectations and questions.
This is very broad history. Just wanted to share:)
PS please correct me if I am wrong. I think I studied right, but it can be biased or not true.

For more information check out Skylines Downunder (http://www.skylinesdownunder.co.nz)
weight: 3100s it is more like 3500 lbs. Nissan claims the R32 at 1440 kg's but it really weights 1510 kg's or 3328 lb's. The R34 is 80kg's heavier yet proclaimed.

Yeah, the Skyline R34 usually weighs in at about that much. Like I said, Nissan have used weight saving techniques like aliminium panels, carbon fibre here and there, an undertray (I just wanted to say this as there are some badass ones available, I don't think it reduces weight :D , also, Nissan have even used lightweight speakers made out of carbon and aluminium).
Some good UK Spec R34 V Spec IIs make 320hp stock.
Speed figures really depend on the driver and the driver's skill. If I drove the R34, I'd get a crap time as the car is powerful and I'd make it jolt and stall (remember: the extensive electronic aids aren't a replacement for driver skill, their just an aid to aid the driver).

In my opinion the only thing problem with the Skyline is it's huge amount of weight. Vipers weigh in about the same as a Skyline. If it were closer to 3000lbs I'd be happy. I guess that all the extra stuff you get 4WD and ATTESA and Super HICAS are worth it:D

hehe ok know a bit bout the engine....now...sum more newbie questions, got more but the 10 that i really have no clue about:
1. whats the difference between, sway bars, strut bars, and strut power bars?
2. whats the difference between, exhaust and muffler?
3. what exactly is a burnout? how do you pull it off? whats so kool about it? it just looks like sumbody wasting their tires to me.
4. what is drifting? is it skidding? how do they pull it off? again whats so good about it? it also looks like sumbody is wasting their tires.
5. whats the difference between hp and bhp? if its the same thing, what does the "b" stand for?
6. whats the difference between a short ram intake and a cold air intake?
7. how are engines named? like 4agze or rb26dett? where duz that come from? i heard the "z" stands for supercharged and "t" stands for turbo charged, is there sumthing significant bout the other letters, and the order of it?
8. why dont i ever see a supercharger and a turbocharger in the same car? howcome that doesnt work?
9. if a skyline engine is 6 cylinder with 2.6 L displacement and veilside got it up to more than 1300hp why cant they get like a viper and do the same? or can they?
10. why am i so stupid and why is everybody else so smart? :licker:
hehe thx for any help i can get, i gotta learn all this stuff sooner or later
i just dont know where from so i posted here.

9a. Yes there are Vipers putting out extreme amounts of horsepower, SVS is workin on a street legal Viper putting out 1700 hp. And the Skyline just doesn't follow the rules, it has an extremely strong engine, my opinion is they Skyline has the potencial the be the best peformance car in the world.
www.supervipersystems.com <--site for those Vipers.
let some of the other guys answer some of the other questions, i'm not the best at explaining.
3a. um....burning out is just spinning tires at a higher rate than the whole speed of the car, and yes it is quite a waste of rubber but hey, it's fun!! you can do it by either sidestepping the clutch or just pressing the gas pedal down in a car with plenty of power.
eh....i can't even begin to explain some of the others, for some of those answers go to the Engineering/Techincal forum in Cars in General and search for your answers, i'm almost sure most of them will show up. too lazy right now to do it myself, sorry! and good luck!

Sway bars or anti-sway bars fit to the suspesion under the car. The help prevent torsion roll and body roll. Strut braces are just that. The brace the strut towers in the engine bay and trunk (boot) prevent flexing of the front and rear of the body where the shocks and struts attach to.
2. whats the difference between, exhaust and muffler?
Exhaust is generally refered to as the entire system from the exhaust manifold(s) back, where as a muffler refers to only the muffler(s)
3. what exactly is a burnout? how do you pull it off? whats so kool about it? it just looks like sumbody wasting their tires to me.
A burnout is when you spin the rear or (front wheels on a FWD car) over fast while either stationary or moving causeing them to lose traction and begin to over heat producing burning rubber and smoke. The idea is that when you do this you put heat into the tryes to make them soft and sticky. The only issue is with most street tyres it is a waste of time as they are not designed to hold heat and actually become greasy if done to long.
4. what is drifting? is it skidding? how do they pull it off? again whats so good about it? it also looks like sumbody is wasting their tires.
Drifting is an art. It takes a lot of practice to get it right. The Japanese started this craze and it is growing at a rapid rate. The object is to pitch the car into a controlled slide BEFORE you enter the corner and continue it around the full corner. Now here is where it gets very hard. Keep that slide going into the next corner and so on. If you are able to get your hands on some Option videos you can see some really bloody greats at it. I have seen guys do it non-stop for an entire circut of a race track. Down the longers straights they keep the car going side to side and time it for the next corner. Car setup and power to the ground is critical in being able to pull this off. It also takes a shit load of driver skills.
5. whats the difference between hp and bhp? if its the same thing, what does the "b" stand for?
BHP = Brake Horse Power
I've heard two different definitions but from what I understand it from proffessional tuners is the following. BHP was originally derived by the British. The manufacturers were taxed back then and maybe still are not sure, on the horsepower rating of the car. So by taking the hp at the wheels you wind up with a lower figure though the actual hp the car produces is the same. Horse Power generally means what the engine produces on bench with no attachments such as fan, altinator etc. to it. The manufactures have used both these rating for years. Most people when the claim hp of their cars mean it at the flywheel. It is best to ask is that at the crank or wheels when someone is claiming specific hp rating for their car.
6. whats the difference between a short ram intake and a cold air intake?
Ram air intake is just that. The air is rammed in via some sort of snorkle or intake duct such as what is on some of the older muscle cars. Dodge came up with that on cars such as the Super B, Charger, and Challengers with a hood scoop. As far as a short one I would presume it means the distance from the snorkle to the top of the carberator or throttle body. Cold air intake term means taking out side the car air and feeding the engine with that instead of drawing air from inside the engine bay which would be heated by the engine or exhaust manifold and exhaust.
7. how are engines named? like 4agze or rb26dett? where duz that come from? i heard the "z" stands for supercharged and "t" stands for turbo charged, is there sumthing significant bout the other letters, and the order of it?
I can't speak for any others except the RB series in the Skyline as honestly who would know why manufacturers label them as they do. The RB series is as follows
RB= Race Bread
D= Double Over Head Cam
E= Electronic fuel injection
26= CC displacement
T= Turbo
TT= Twin turbo
8. why dont i ever see a supercharger and a turbocharger in the same car? howcome that doesnt work?
Two complete different systems. A super charger or blower uses the engine's static revs to drive a belt which in turns drives a turbin inside a given housing. This in turn pressurizes the intake system producing boost. Turbo Charging uses the engine's exhaust gases along with resistance to produce boost but spinning the turbin wheel or exhaust wheel inside a snail housing, which is connected to a compressor wheel. That is why there is lag on a turbo charged car while there is virtually none an super charged car. Trying to combine the two would be an engineering nightmare. Not to mention a tuning nightmare. As you can see you would need to bleed off the boost produced by the super charger once the turbo started to spool producing boost of its own. The engine's compenents are matched to give optimal performance at a given rev range. It would be nearly impossible to combination the two without handgranading the motor. Also you would have a power curve that would not look right or even work. Guys with turbos have used NOS to increase torque while off boost and in that lag area.

And with the engine code thingy, every manufacturer has a diff set of code, and what each letter means.

In all my years of following motorsports I have never heard of seen it, but again that does not me it never existed or was tried. I know if it was successfull we would see a lot of it today so maybe it wasn't.

There are truck's in the states (that do bull pull's) that are super cahrged and turbo charged. I know of one that is twin supercharged and twin turbo'd. Generates enough torque to almost twist the chassis in half.
As for a previous post, I think you will find that RB doesn't mean Race Breed. It is something a little more mundane like
R = Inline 6
B = Petrol (sorry to kill all overpowering visions)
The reason I say this is because there was an RD30 that was preduced which was diesal.

B for benzine which practically has the same meaning as petrol/gasoline, that could be right.
