I replaced the PCV valve on my 96 Altima this weekend. Just want to share with you. So that you can save $300 labor for a part that's only worth $4. You can do this by either removing power steering and the breather or the idle air control valve. I removed the latter, because I can clean the IACV when I tear it off at the same time.
1) Disconnect the negative battery cable and jack up the car securely.
2) Remove the oil filter. You won't lose too much oil, so there is no need to drain the oil first.
3) Remove the oil filter base (four 12 mm bolts). A flex head wrench works best.
4) Disconnect the electric harness from above the IACV.
5) Remove the Idle air control valve (four 10 mm bolts). The upper two bolts can be accessed from above by using a 10 mm socket with extension bar, and the lower two bolts can be accessed from below.
6) Disconnect the two small hoses connected with the IACV. Be aware, antifreeze is inside these small hoses. So wear a pair of safety glasses and find something to stop the hose from leaking coolant out once you take it off.
7) Disconnect the big 3/4 inch hose (for air) and take off the IACV.
8) Now the PCV valve can be screwed off using a 19 mm stubby wrench.
Installation is the reverse of the above.
My car has 160 k. When I shook the PCV, it still rattles well, although with a lot of oil gunk on it.
