98 Rodeo Engine Sputtering Problems

Hi,
On the drive to work this morning I heard something that sounded like metal falling from the car. About 20 minutes later my engine starts to sputter a bit and my CEL starts flashing at a constant pace.
I've checked the drain plug, spark plugs and from a quick glance, everything seems to still be under the hood.
Does anyone have any idea of which direction I should even begin to look at to determine what the problem is? I know the obvious is to have the ECU codes read, but I would like to have an idea of where to go before I bring it into Kragens.
Thanks.

You are correct. CEL codes are needed. Otherwise, we would all be tossen' out idea's like:
1. Did you check the oil?
2. How many miles on the truck?
3. Maintenance history?
4. and so on.....

In general, what is the difference between a flashing vs solid CEL?

Flashing cel = misfires. I'd check plugs and coils. Don't know what the metal sound was. Timing belt good?
