Repairing scratch in dashboard.

I have an 04 silverado and there are two spots on the dash where the gray color is peeling up due to a scratch. anybody know how i can repair this? they are just about 1/4 inch long.

leather technologies in virginia have color dyes made for leather and vinyl . I last year totally re dyed my 96 impala dash. it now looks new. they have also a color kit and you can fix seat color damage as well or on any vinyl/leather surface. these are water based dyes that can be sprayed or applied by brush or applied like stain on furniture with a cloth.

Dont do what I first did on my 03 Silverado. It had the tan interior, and a couple spots on the upper dash pad had worn thru showing the color black. I bought some tan "plastic-vinyl" spray paint at OReillys, and thought I could touch it up. As soon as I sprayed it, it started melting and peeling all of the existing dash pad. I later found out that they are painted with a water based paint, and the paint I used was solvent based. Fortunately I ran into a company at a used car dealership that does automotive interior restorations , and they resprayed my dash for 100 bucks, and it looked brand new. I kinda wonder if the "armor all" type protectants actually harms these type dash pads, because I have seen alot of these that have the color worn off, both the grey and tan. Good Luck!

i'm glad that you responded with your horror story. refinishing these parts requires water based products. and the company i listed has the proper dye to repair color damage to leather /vinyl materials. use of solvents is a receipe for disaster........unless you have a 1965 impala dash

Yeah, I was using some nice shiny stuff on my dash and the dealer service department "advised" to stop using in because of that very fact. I just use soap and water now!

when cleaning use only water or a vinyl cleaner if necessary. some soaps will make vinyl brittle.......

i have used formula 2001 or now called F21 on all my cars and my truck for 3 years and it gives the nice shiny look and does not dry and make brittle. i have no problem with any peeling or anything.

it appears to me that the newer the model year the poorer the quality of vinyl coatings as my older vehicle 1984 looks better than 2000. and the 96 i had to dye because it was turning from gray to brown. still soft but vinyl base color bleedig threw gray........
