wat's a 351 modified like? i'm might be buyin a car wit one in it and i wanna kno any flaws or good things bout them?

Depends on if it is a Cleveland, winsor, or what specific 351 it is. What car it is in, and what has been modified. The 351 has some good points, like the fact that you don't have to adjust the lifters like a 350 or 305, It is a strong motor, built heavy to stand up to HP.

It all depends like stangman said, and on how intensely modified it is. I you were drop a 351 in pretty much stock form between the frame rails of a FOX, I don't think you will much of a gain. The 351 is substantially heavier then a 302, so the extra HP gained from the cubes is lost in the weigh factor. But then again those motor have the ability to crank out the power!

u boys much not know much about ford engines. a 351 modified is an engine like the 351 clevland or windsor. lol and it's in a 1979 mercury cougar.

The 351M was designed to replace the 351C. Ford only used the “M” designation to distinguish it from the 351 W (Windsor) and the 351C (Cleveland). The “M” designation has now become know to mean “modified” or “Michigan,” even though the 351M was produced at both the Cleveland foundry and Michigan casting center, and originally had no meaning but as an identifying mark.
The 351M is pretty close in comparison to the 351C. The stroke is still 3.5, but the main journal diameter enlarged from 2.75 inches to 3.0 inches to allow for a greater bearing wear area. The 351M is also close in comparison to the 400, and all have one big thing in common. They started from a 351C block for starters. The valve trains are all interchangeable (except pushrods) and the cylinder heads are all compatible. The 351M is designed to make more low end torque for bigger cars and trucks, and was built with emissions regulations in mind that the 351C couldn't handle. Lastly the 351M was mass produced from 1974 till 1979, but still popped up in some Broncos, F250 and F350's till 1982.

it's also called modifed because of the transmission mounting u can mount a 302 and some other transmission on it. that's the main diffrence.

I don't know much about trannys, but I never heard of a 302 tranny...I did know that the heads on a 351 and 302 are almost identical and can be swapped, the only difference is the head bolt hole diameter is bigger on a 351.

it's also called modifed because of the transmission mounting u can mount a 302 and some other transmission on it. that's the main diffrence.
No, Ford changed the transmission bell-housing pattern to match that of the larger 429/460 engines. That way Ford could use the larger, heavy-duty 460 C6 transmission. This motor was ment for big cars and trucks which needed a bigger stronger gear box to move them monster slush boxes.

HiFlow answers are all correct. Only things to was that the 400 came first then came the 351M hence why M=modified it's a destroked(modified) 400 and also why they share crack journal sizes. Also they 400 and 351M came with the 2V heads which like he said produce torque. And the Clevelands mostly came with the 4V quenched style heads which were for higher RPM/HP motors.

I just thought I would keep it on the basic 351m side, rather then confuse him with the whole 400 thing, ya know? But good points I neglected to mention!
