I have a '05 Dodge Ram 4.7, It has 32k miles. I bought it used in 7/07 with 24K miles on it. Month and 1/2 ago, the check engine light came on. It was almost time for oil change. After I changed the oil it didn't come back on. Last week the light came back on. I'm still 1000 miles away from next oil change. I do have the K&N air intack system I installed in 8/07. Any suggestions appreciated.

take it to a local auto zone or advance auto parts and have them read the code and post back. We can help you better with the actual code that is being thrown.

Does the On-Off-On-Off-On trick work on those newer trucks? The first gens, that method would make it blink the codes being thrown with the check engine light.

First off, a check engine light does not mean you need an oil change. Take it to autozone and have the code read. The on, off, on works but you get a digital read out of the code on the odometer.

OBTAINING DTC'S USING IGNITION KEY

Cycle the ignition key ON - OFF - ON - OFF - ON within 5 seconds .
The odometer will show the P-code for the DTC code number. Refer to the DTC chart for a detailed explanation of the DTC codes.
If no DTC's are present, the cluster will display one of two texts: "P1684" and "done" or only "done".
"P1684" is only a status and indicates that the PCM memory has been cleared within the last 50 ignition cycles and does not indicate a problem.
"done" indicates that NO DTCs are present and the procedure is complete.
