Ferrari F430 WIP

Here's another project of mine, Fujimi's rendition of the Ferrari F430. I'm building the option parts version, which means BBS rims and special seats are included. The body, where I always start, looked good except for the molded-in mesh for the engine compartment, which I removed. The body was then primed and painted Tour de France blue from Zero paints, followed by six coats of Zero clear. I then polished the paint with 3M rubbing compound.

The interior will be tan, and I plan to add carbon-fiber accents on the dash and center console. The rest of the build will be close to box-stock.

Thanks guys! I should have some interior work worth showing within a couple days.

Here are the seats and dash. The tan is a custom mixture of Tamiya sand and orange, and I applied a wash of dark brown in the seat crevices. The dash has SMS carbon-fiber decals cleared with Tamiya smoke. The finish on the steering wheel is kind of crummy so I may re-do it.

Fantastic paint - interesting color choice, but I like that...looks great so far.

Nice work! I especially like those ace seats. I was trying to mix a tan, damn, it's tricky isn't it? The question is, why don't they sell one? I know everyone wants a different shade, but it seems like a glaring omission to me.

Thanks for the comments. mrawl, I really do wish someone made a suitable Ferrari tan, but I'll just have to keep mixing my own until someone makes some!

I decided to mask off the trim with BMF, tamiya tape and aluminum foil and spray the window trim.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh215/joeblyth/IMG_0597.jpg?t=1203437820

Everything was going fine, until I pulled up the tape!

I really don't know what happened; I always sand the plastic with 800 grit sandpaper before I prime, clean with dish liquid and water, and prime with high-quality primer. (Zero) Maybe I just got unlucky? I'm particularily puzzled with the paint pulled up on the roof, that's just plain weird that it pulled up in a nice line like that. Oh well, you live you learn! I'm in the process of repairing it now.

Ouch. That sucks.
Hmmm. I should be carefull than. I painted and cleared my F430 with zeropaints, and I'm about to mask everything for painting the window trim...

Good luck repairing that spot.

Thanks for the support guys. So far I've sanded everything down, layed more primer down, color coat, and a couple coats of clear. In a couple days I'll polish it out and see what happens!

if everything fails, go around & ask that someone with a spare F430 body to let.

i remember someone from this modeling forum put it down not long ago...

Great color and excellent interior work. Sucks about the paint issues. I just had a few this week myself (Ferrari no less). Looks like one great paint job--hope the repair turns out. Do you have any pics of the repair process?

I've basically gotten the chips worked out. I sanded the immediate area around the chips with 1500 grit sandpaper, making sure to make a smooth transition. I made another mask (and crossed my fingers it wouldn't pull up the paint!) and repainted the area like usual. After the paint had cured for about a week I leveled it all out with 4000 grit Micromesh and polished with Tamiya coarse compound. I've also gotten work on the rest of the car done, namely the engine, interior, and chassis. The engine is very shallow, but represents the engine well if you're not studying the model. Everything was painted according to my references, and the Ferrari scripts on the intake are Crazy Modeler photoetch. The interior is mostly done, I just need to add the handbrake and seat belts and it's done. The kit comes with Enzo-style brakes, and carbon-ceramic rotors are available as an option on the F430 so I decided to paint them with a mixture of black and gunmetal to represent this. The calipers are painted yellow because I like them that way. :) I then mocked-up everything to get a sense of how it will look when I'm done!

Amazing rcovery! We can't see much in the pics, so what is your opinion of the repair? Is it invisible, or a bit nasty, or what? Beautiful color btw.

Thanks guys! :)

mrawl, I tried to get the best pic I could of the repaired spots, but it was hard to get just right! Honestly, to my eyes, it looks like I never fixed the paint.
