Auto to Manual conversion

So I found a really good deal on a '98 Gt, only problem is, it's an automatic.. So before I buy it, I'm wondering how much it would be to convert it to manual?.. I don't think a used manual transmission with about the same miles on it or less (60K) would be that terribly much, but what else would need to be done to complete the conversion and how much about would it cost total? Thankss..

Its possible for sure, but with a 98 you might as well just find another one that is already manual. They are pretty plentiful, and after you get into a project like that you will likely find that it was more worth it to just find the right car for you to begin with.

I think they have different ECM's, too, so you'll be into electronics, too. Like has been stated, it's more trouble than it's worth. I did it once but the car had already been a stick, so the clutch/brake hanger was still there. I had to replace the bellhousing, get a used clutch/brake hanger as the clutch pedal had been sawed off, a driveshaft (I don't know if the automatics and sticks are different lengths). It was a pain and I had the tranny already. This was on a '65 GTO way before electronics and FI.

He won't need a computer, you only need the auto computer for shifting with the automatic, if your manually shifting then you can still leave the auto computer in there. But I do agree, its more trouble than its worth. I just swapped to an auto in my mustang it was manual all its life, had a tremec, lakewood bell, aluminum flywheel and all the goodies. Now its got an auto in it and its way more fun to drive. But of course its got a manual valve body so I still gotta shift it, and its twin turbo with 900whp so the stick was kinda useless.
Autos can be fun, put a converter and shift kit in it.
