92 Regal code 17

Hello,

I just purchased a 92 Regal on the cheap, but on the way home it had an occasional miss or shudder (ran fine during the test drive of course) The service engine light would flicker on briefly during the miss but not stay on. This car has the 3800 V6. I jumped the diagnostic port and had only one trouble code, which was code 17. Per the Haynes guide this is a "cam position sensor circuit" code but has no further information on what to do for the check or where exactly the sensor is. Car is also a bit hard to start for being fuel injected. Not sure how many miles on the car as the odo quit at 70k though the digital speedo works. I read some posts on code 41, could this be a similar problem? Or could the code be some old unrelated issue and I need to look for something else? Miss seemed to occur most often at about 50-60 mph, does not happen at idle. Idle itself can range from smooth to erratic. Car starts ok cold, but very hard to restart after shutdown. Any direction on this issue is appreciated, I want to drive this thing at some point...

This sounds like you may have an erratic spark reference signal. CKPS is usually the culprit here!

Is ckps the crankshaft position sensor? Does my model even have a cam position sensor, or just the crank? The crank pos sensor is by the balancer, right? Does anyone have a reference as to what pin is what at the ecm? I want to check my connections there but I am not sure what pin belongs to what. I didn't find it in the Haynes manual.

Connections seemed ok at ECM. Is the crank pos sensor plug and play, or do you need to do something special to align it?
