Alternator not charging??

I have a '97 GT3000 which appeared as if the alternator wasn't charging the battery. I had the alternator rebuilt and the voltmeter still read anywhere form 10-4v!. I replaced the alternator to get the same results to my dismay, low voltage reading. I checked battery negative and positive wiring, all seems well, tight no loose connections.
Recently the battery died (the voltage meter was reading 0 with the car running) so a borrowed a battery to get a jump. After the car started with my friend's battery it shutdown when the battery was I disconnected from the terminals. This happened again on subsequent attempts. I had to borrow the battery to get the car home!
During troubleshooting the CHECK ENGINE light came on but after disconnecting the battery. Diagnostic check revealed no error codes.
I know typically the shutdown of the engine when the battery is disconnected is indicative of alternator problems, but 2 alternators? Just thinking outside the box could this be another problem-grounded wiring somewhere, a blown fuse?
The GT has a bulldog security system installed-this is the only major electrical change made to the vehicle. Help is desperately needed guys. Thanks.

Check to see if the altenator fusible link in the fuse box is blown. If its blown the alt cant charge the battery.
