I am having a noise when i hit 2k rpms until about 2.3rpms. I have a 94 altima 5speed manual with about 185k miles. The noise is very slight and is on the left hand side of the engine near the pully system. The noise happens when im idle and driving. Any ideas? please help.

It's from the timing chain. When your timing chain tensioner is gunked up by the worn oil, the timing chain might slide with the timing chain guide and make the noise. There are two guides for the upper timing chain. If the noise is from the upper one, it's much easier to fix. I'd recommend you to remove both of the guides and put a new timing chain tensioner. The guides are useless, except for making noises. New Altima does not have these anymore.

Open the valve cover, you will see the upper guide. It's as easy as a pie to remove this one. However to remove the second one, you need to remove the sprocket cover, which will require you to remove one engine mount and the mount bracket.

Read this first. Your car may not require you to remove the distributor.

I wouldn't be so quick to say it is the timing chain without first understanding more about the 'noise' as you ambiguously described. Is the noise more pronounced on a cold engine during warm-up and get better upon a warmed-up engine? Is there a difference in the noise when you change from neutral to 1st gear? When in gear, do you hear a 'rattle' type noise when turning the steering wheel at low speeds?

If your answers to all of the above questions are 'yes', then I would check your serpentine belt for proper tightness. It is possible that your belt tensioner pulley is a little loose. Good Luck!

Thanks for all the help! To further discribe the noise; it really doesnt happen when its cold, maybe after driving it abouta mile does the noise start up. The noise stays the same noise lvl no matter what gear i shift too. The car still runs great besides the noise and the noise is almost like a straw in a small glass bottle. How much am i looking at parts wise if i fix it myself and how much am i looking at price wise if i take it into a shop? and thanks again for all the help.

I can't remember hearing a noice like that. But if its at 2k rpms, sounds like maybe something is loose rubbing up against something metal. When did it start makng the nosie, was it after someone perfromed wok on it?

Buy a stethoscope from the parts store. It's about $10. You will be able to pinpoint the source of the noise. Then come back later.

Be careful not to touch any moving part of the engine.
