Power Steering Pump Failure

Guys,
My 1996 JGC I6 4.0 PS Pump just seems to have shattered this morning. I heard a light griniding sound and then it really went nuts after I turned a corner and headed up the hill in my neighborhood.
At first, because of the griniding, I thought it was my transmission, but I got it over to the curb and popped the hood. PS fluid everywhere, the pulley was wobbling and it clearly had failed internally (I guess I can be thankful it really wasn't the transmission though, huh?).
Has anyone else had this happen to them before and could installing the serpentine belt worng or overtightening it cause this to happen? I ask this because I just had the water pump replaced a couple of weeks ago and didn't have much of a hint that the PS pump was about to go.
Now, I am also guessing that when they decide to go, they just go, and mine has never been replaced to my knowledge. So, I can live with that as well.
