the door will not unlock with the switch or manually. how does the door panel come off to see what is causing the lock not to work manually?

You'll have to start by removing the upper garnish: (trim around the window)
Carefully pull the sliding door garnish molding away from the sliding door in order to release the clips.
Then remove the interior handle. If you push back on the door pad near the handle you'll see a metal clip, slide a rag behind the handle and let it catch on the clip to remove it. The rest of the door pad is held in place by christmas trees. If you have one of these tools:

If not Gently slide your fingers behind the door pad and pull. You'll be able to feel were the trees are holding into the door itself.
