timing belt stripped after 3000 km's

this engine was completly rebuilt. everything was replaced brand new, and the timing belt stripped its teeth until it stalled. there is only 3000 kms on the engine, and the belt was brand new. what could cause this? lack of tension? shitty belt? it wasnt a mitsu belt:banghead: . can a timing belt make a sqeeling noise like a bad altenator belt?

If done by shop , i would take it in for repairs. Also with timing belts nothing beats OEM mitsubishi in my opinion and some others feel the same , some different.

Lack of tension and poor belt quality will trash a timing belt in no time.

What brand belt was it? I personally run nothing but OEM. May have been a shitty tensioner also, my moneys on the belt.

No. Yes. Thats probably a big part of it. Not to my knowledge.

If the teeth were physically falling off I dont think anything would cause that except an uber shitty belt.

If more than a couple teeth skipped/stripped I'd be willing to bet you toasted a set of valves. Thats a shitty thing to have happen 3k km's into the new motor :(. If it was a shop that did it and they just bought the parts and did it, I would probably go down and chew a little ass, but if you brought them the stuff and they just put it on or you ok'd them using shittier stuff, you might be SOL. Good luck though dude.

Sounds like a bad belt, like thor said. Depending on who got the parts, this can really turn into a clusterfuck.

A bad belt might have been some of the problem but even a cheap belt wont just loose all its teeth. I would check and make sure everything in the timing belt assembly is working correctly. A locked up water pump or idler pulley could cause this.

I was reading this and Silver beat me to it. But I agree. I've never seen the teeth just fall off. If something got jammed and wasn't spinning, the belt would have still been pulled around it, causing the teeth to get stripped right off.

yeah wierd, i did it myself, but this is my 4th belt on these engines. i dont think it can get any easier. it kinda felt like something siezed up first, but it happens so fast its hard to tell. guarenteed they hit valves, i felt it. i paid $1000 just for pistons and rods so i hope they are still good so i can bore my 6 bolt to those pistons. as far as a head goes. can i take a non turbo head from a laser, and put my cams in it, then use that?

jw, how could a locked up water pump cause this to happen to the timing belt? the water pump spins from the altenator belt, not the timing belt like on most hondas.

No its the T-Belt that spins the water pump. The Alt. belt only spins the alternator.

The 420a motors have the water pump on the timing belt. I kinda assumed that the 4g63 was the same way. You are right, the water pump is on the alternator belt, I would check out everything that the timing belt runs out to see if anything is locked up.

You pistons should be fine. They may have some dents in them but as long as they dont have any holes you should be fine.

And could you please put your car in your sig, this would help cut done on some confusion as to what motor you have.

LOL, i guess we're running in circles. We don't know what type of engine it is.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news ... but I am in the process of rebuilding my 420a because of a blown belt ... all valves were bent AND .... the Piston grooves on two piston on the intake side were hit so hard it actually bent the grooves and top ring down about .020-.030". Them babies were locked up tight in the grooves. Pistons needed to be replaced. I can link up a picture if you would like to see the damage. The thing is you wouldn't know it unless you take the pistons out.

yeah i know. i gotta tear it all apart on monday or tuesday. what is the chance the oil pump siezed up? it was brand new though, just like everything else. whatever, thats the easy part. finding the head might be hard. the only difference in the 1g turbo vs. non turbo heads are cams right?

the damage really depends on rpm more than anything. the only thing that could save me is the belt only broke around 3000 rpm. but the more i think about it, the more i think they're f'ed. the original pistons i took out when i first bought the car were shot. one had a hole in it. that rod was bent. i couldnt find one valve. it either got broken up into a million pieces, or got lodged up in my cat (which could very well be my exaust rattle at 2500 rpm.)every other valve was bent. the head was so mashed from the broken valve it would have leaked compression into the next cylinder. none the less it was bad. and this one could very well be the exact same. it was in gear when it happened, so the crank would have kept going till a valve jammed everything up. whatever, i guess its just money right?

That may be true ... but for some of us it is comes thru much hard work and stress. It would be nice to know what failed.
Not that it could do much good for you now. Sorry for you Guy!
