WIP Opel Calibra

The Opel Calibra was never sold here, in North America, but has always been a favourite of mine...and they are allowed in Canada under our '15-year' import rule.

Should I sell my Fairlady Z, I'd certainly consider bringing in a nice Calibra 4X4 Turbo....stock of coarse, not like my drawing here, which I've given a quasi-DTM look. How about a JTS 3.2L swap to go with it?

nice work ,great angle ,do you create your own bodykits or copy from existing ones??

re: the car we had them ere in OZ ,they are heavy pigs which dont go very well stock ,and were prone to breaking boxes and driveline stuff often ,but i can understand if you love the car you just have to have it no matter the negatives

I create my own kit...the Calibra was relatively mild. Basically, I've lowered it and pulled out the fenders a bit. Obviously, perspective and solid volumes still has to be bang on for these drawings to work.

Just for fun a may post my other reference pix if you guys like, just to see how far I've taken some of them...:runaround:

haha, over here that car is considered the "hairdressers" car :P They are so common here in the uk. before i knew it was a hairdressers car i thought they looked pretty cool, i like what youve done with it ;)

Probably a lot like the V6 Mustangs, here in the early '90s. :D

I've always liked their clean design (before Vauxhall mucked their version up with that 'V' grill insert...), although GM's reputation for building rather pedestrian cars seem to hold true around most parts of the globe.

Like a light box and a4?

Like seen the overview image of your drawing and the ref picture.
Helps to see how far you have gone in creating the customs mods
to the basic body shape.

Ya, I've got a light table, made from items available at IKEA. It consists of a 3X6 FT sheet of frosted safety glass, two adjustable 'work-horses' and a couple of clamped snake lamps. You can probably still find similiar items today. I've had this set-up for about 10 years and put it together for about $85 (USD).

I usually stick to 8.5X11, which roughly equates A4, although I also do larger 'conceptual' pieces on 'legal' size (8.5X14 inch) paper.

For the actual sketching I use various Colerase blues and then go over it with a BIC Grip 'fine' pen.

That's about it!

It looks nice! I loved this car too but only when I played GT2. After that, I don't know, never liked it, but I do like the design. Have you ever tried freehanding it? Since you've been tracing for a while, it should help you a lot when you draw without reference. =D It's how I've been doing it for years now. It really helps you improve in perspective.

Freehand is great, but a lot of pros do it this way, including me. It's especially important if you're designing a body styling kit and need proportions to be correct.

Certainly not all of my drawings are done this way. My purely conceptual and layout stuff is free hand.

As per HotRodKristina, I too am a pro in the business, although 'tuner cars' are not usually part of my repertoire...these I do for fun. You still very much need the skills and imagination to pull off a series of tuner cars, as my reference is always 'stock'. I'm just making use of the technology which is available to me as I draw these...
