Belt squealing then breaking

Had problems with belts squealing then alternator quit. Replaced alternator. Belt still squeals. Then after about 30 miles of driving the belt breaks. Replace belt. Belt again squeals. After about 30 miles the belt breaks. What's up? Should I replace water pump? How much of a pain is that to replace. It seems to be wedged in there pretty good. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

thats weird that it keeps breaking, mine just started squealing last night and didnt stop I drove over 15 miles with none stop squealing, I replaced the belt with a new one and tightened it and that fixed it,,, Hmmm did you try different tensions like looser or tighter, also check to see if there is like something that the belt could be snagging, Oh by the way when mine squealed it overheated and smoked but the belt didnt break... So i dont know:runaround:

Had the same problem. Metro belts need to be insanely tight. Make sure your water pump isn't bad (turns freely) I had my buddy take a prybar and help push alternator away while I tightened the belt. But not to where he is straining just putting more tension than you can do with your own hands.
That baby don't squeal a bit now! :grinyes:

you got to becareful cause if the belt is too tight then thats what makes the Alternator bearings go bad and the belt to shread ...

well yeah, if your belt is getting shredded, loosen the tension. my belt got shredded because there wasn't enough tension.
