They do realise that a EVO 6 Tommi Makinen is faster to 100km/h and over the quarter mile than the newest M3 dont they?
Many tests in Australian magazines when they both came out. Evo did it in 5.25 while the M3 was about 5.6 secs.

Also the difference between the jap spec and US spec EVO is more than 5HP.
276 HP is 206KW. That is the most any Japanese manufacturer is allowed to claim in Japan. The GTR, EVO, STI, Supra and RX-7 are all listed as 276HP, but they are in fact much more than this, all easily eclipsing 300HP. So if the US one is listed as 271 HP, u r losing more than u think from the Jap version.

Actualy the Japs Gentlemans agreement (its not law) set an upper limit of 280ps on any road car.
The conversion of ps to hp is 0.97.
So 280ps = 271hp.

Dont know about you but it looks to me like someone at Mitsi in the US simply converted the claimed figure by Mitsi Japan and stuck it to the marketing and promotional material for the US spec EVO VIII.

I'll wait till someone dynos the US spec car before I believe its lost a lot of hp to the Jap and Euro spec EVO VIII.
I doubt its lost more than 20hp, if any.

That said why on earth would you even bother comparing the EVO with the M3? They are quite differnt cars, aimed at quite differnt markets.

(in Japan the EVO, WRX STi etc are listed at 280ps, in Europe and here in NZ etc the EVO and STi is listed at 276hp/206kw. If you take the numbers claimed by the manufactors then the Jap spec cars have less hp than the rest of the worlds. This is of course silly, Its most likly both cars have about 300hp, but for what ever reason its listed as being 280ps in Japan, and from this 276hp is derieved soley as a number to stick on the promotional materail that gives the car an extremly high hp figure, but dosn't make it look like it has more hp than the jap spec car (which it dosnt). The other possiblity is that the Japanese unit of ps is quite differnt from that used in the rest of the world, and from talking to people in the know about such things (i.e. guys who have dyno'd a lot of Jap imports here in NZ) it sounds almost like the Japanese unit lacks any consistancy. Some numbers seem to be derived by taking the cars true hp and adding 10, or rounding up to the nearest 10.
Others have almost exactly in hp, what is claimed in PS. While some have either signifacntly less, or signifcantly more.
Japanese hp numbers are not to be trusted.

Come on people the STI is going to own the EVO:D but really consider this
US STI= The best STI ever
US EVO8=one of the weaker EVOs in EVO history

Thw STI seems better IMO but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I think u will find 280PS IS 276HP, go to an online calculator, it will give u 276HP.
Has always been 276, on the net, in magazines etc etc.
206KW.
Put it this way, the R34 V-SPEC II Nur was dynoed in australian MOTOR magazine and had 214KW at the wheels. This is dynometer not dynojet. If it was dynojet the figure would have been higher.
Pretty good for a car with 206KW at the engine. =)

1ps = 0.97hp (its the only conversion I have ever found, post a link if you find another)

280 x 0.97 = 271.6

I have no idea where 276 hp comes from, but its the standard number released by the western media concerning Japanese cars which are listed as having more than 280ps.
My guess is its a number released by the Japanese that has simply never been questioned as its common knowledge that its wrong.

[edit] Just found that ps is short for pferdestärke, which is german for "Metric Horsepower" which according to http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/dictM.html#metric_hp = 0.98hp which would give you 276hp.
However I have deffinitly seen .97 also used as a conversion, so I'll keep looking. :)

boo yah!@ anyway's until i get some dyno number's im not making any sudden assumption's because no one here simply know's the true power potential of the evo, we just hope for it to be 271 but it is alway's lower than that, honda, mitsu, toyota or which ever type of car manufacturer may claim let's say 156 hp on their car but when it's dynoed it comes out to 134 so it will surely be lower than 271 i just don't know how low it will be and as for the sti it will surely be lower than 300 but you know mostly on turbo'ed car's some manufacturer's will say their car has 230 hp when it has 245 take the dodge srt-4 or whatever it's called they said it had 215 and when it was dynoed they got roughly 230 hp out of the car so no assumption's should be made that's all i can say.:D

The EVO8 is so close to the EVO7 that u basically know what u r getting already if u have been in a 7.
And isnt the 8 already out in America, I thought it was.
I knew I was right about 280PS=276BHP.
214KW at all four wheels in a 206KW car is pretty funny tho.
That would have to be around 260KW or more to get that.

whoa kids...
we're missing the boat...

271 hp vs 276.

wow, we're losing so much hp vs the jdm cars...
we've got stricter emissions, does this surprise you?

also...

if a car is listed at say, 156 hp, as you say, and is dynoed for 134...
wow.

the hp rating of a vehicle is at the flywheel, not the wheels. that's why it's different. let's get everything straight on that.

if we want to nit pick, if you throw an evo on an awd dyno, you'll find the hp rating to be much lower than the number given by mitsu...

b/c you've got to do the conversion (so the corrected hp at the flywheel, allowing for the drivetrain power loss will be the same or higher than what was stated by mistu)

make sense?

Well, I wouldn't say "wankers on crappy forum", it's actually one of the better forums you'll ever find, just for some reason in this particular case there were a few morons (aka iron chef!!)

Yeah, a stock 160KW WRX only dynoes on a 4WD dyno at around 95AWKW, it is driveline loss through the 4WD system. As far as I know the EVO 6 was around 150AWKW.

It's no chart, but it's about as close as we're likely to get until the cars are released to the public.
