oil light 1999 Sebring

I have a 1999 Sebring (not sure engine size, I know it is a V6). The problem I am having seems to be the same as some that have been addressed in different forums. My oil light flickers or comes on at a stop. If I hold brake and depress gas pedal it will go off until I let off gas. Light does not come on at all while driving. This has been occurring for several weeks now. I just had the oil changed a week ago and mentioned this to the mechanic. He used 10w/30 added a quart of Lucas oil in case the oil weight might be an issue. He said that the oil sending unit was not leaking. The light did not come on for a week, but was coming on again this morning. I checked the oil and it is full. I know that I have valve cover leaks and a slight leak from the rear main; however the car has 117,000 miles and my thought has been just to monitor the oil level frequently until I need to replace the motor or buy a new car.

I have read about the 08-36-99 Bulletin could this be the problem? I also read other posts talking about stray voltage and a new sending unit with a second ground. Are these the same things? One more thing given what I have said how urgent is this? I know oil is crucial, but don’t understand if what is going on will lead to lack of oil to the engine. Is the car going to leave me stranded?

Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated

I would start with what I think is the easiest thing and thats replacing the oil presure sensor which should be above the oil filter.

I have been driving my 03 (2.7L) for almost a year with the same light. I changed my oil sending unit twice and it didnt help. I also tried the Lucas oil and it runs smotther but then the light comes on. I am looking at the oil pump. Not a normal wear issue though. It is all gears and dont normally wear. The only thing I can see is possible rings or main bearings.

Not something I want to tackle but looking to do it. My mechanic told me 3 days and $1200 for him to do it. I have no idea how hard it is to do this but if you find out let me know.

Good luck!

$1200 is awful cheap unless he rebuilds the whole engine then you got a bargin. if it was rings it would be smoking like heck and if main and rod bearings were out you would know it it would be knocking like hell, and oil pump is out it would be even knocking worse it would'nt get oil to the lifters, valves, all this under valve covers. but the seal i may belive. because cars with 100.000 miles on them these days there just broke in. it could just be that wire on sending unit might not be getting contack all the time.

Pulled the oil pan and pick up tube was somewhat clogged. Cleaned it out with cleaner and so far so good.

Found a guy to do the water pump and timing chain for $550 labor. Parts another story. Got them wholesale and they are not cheap. If you replace the water pump you musdt change the timing chain due to an upgrade of the pump. Goes through 09 now. What a pain!

Hey everyone in this forum: I am having the same issue with my (97 sebring convertible JXi 2.5L) when my oil light lights up and my RPM goes below 500-1000 and my car start shaking.

I would start with oil pressure switch, very common on this car.

Make sure the plastic dummy plug gets removed from the oil pressure switch connector and also make sure all the oil gets cleaned from the connector. Failure to do this may result in the oil tracking the voltage to ground, causing the light to illuminate or blink at times.
