On my 98 yukon 5.7 after replacing my radiator in early 07 and then having my intake gasket replaced in nov 07 i have noticed that i have to keep my eye on my coolant level about every week or so. The resevoir is or almost dry by this time, so keep adding water. Before having these jobs done i never had to pay this close attention to the coolant level. I've had the the yukon for about 3 years and it had about 80000 miles then. I am now at 135,000 and wondering is this quite normal or is it possible i may have an undetected leak somewhere? By adding water everytime is the antifreeze thinning out? Do i need to keep a jug of antifreeze or is the water ok?

you're definately losing coolant, whether or not it's related to the gasket i can't be sure. and yes when you add water it thins out your coolant, and during the summer that's not a problem, but during the winter when it gets cold it can be. if there's to much water in the antifreeze, then the water can freeze in your engine and ruin it. I would keep a jug of antifreeze to put in it. I would also have a shop look at it, because losing coolant is never good.

check the oil level for being overfull and milky looking, white smoke out the exhaust after the engine is up to temp, the front passenger side carpet for being wet and for puddles underneath it that weren't there before you park. these are easy ways to get an idea of where the coolant is going. After the leak is fixed I would replace the coolant all together that way you know its good.
