I Tried to solve this on my own but no one else's problems seemed to fit mine, I have a 90 model With the 2.8 ltr v-6 z-24 it was just gave to me because it started acting up last week, before I know its ran perfect for 3 years it was a friends car...anyway
When you run the car til it gets to operating temp it shuts down, sometime it will restart sometimes it wont, even if I drive it say 5 miles then turn it off for more than a cople of mins it wont restart until its cold although a few times its fired alittle like it wants to start when its hot
from time to time it will stutter alittle on cold start but not typically
I have a whole wrecked car worth of engine parts but dont know whats wrong with it, its not the engine itself, its got great compression and vacuum for the mileage it is a pretty high mileage car, 150k+
any idea please let me know:uhoh:
Thanks
Ben

ok, seems to be a heatsoak problem for sure. start with the simple things. fuel pressure regulator...is it leaking when you pull off the vacuum line? does it have a distributor or coil packs? either way, the thermal compound may have dried up over time and not transferring heat like it should. when it won't start, is it getting spark, and fuel?

the regulator is good, I will try to check for fire today when it dies, I do know its not the tcc or the iac, map or maf, thats what I have tested the coil pack is rough to get to...the spark is really strong when it is running tho-

I have a 90 Z-24 with 3.1 in it . I had the same problem that was the crankshaft sensor ( $20 item). Good Luck

...the spark is really strong when it is running tho-yes but has it been checked when it`s a no-go? Have you got it scanned for any codes.

The crank sensor will crack over time from the heat. When the engine is cold,it will be fine. As the engine warms up it expands. Thus your engine will shut down till it cools down again.

These are all possible, but I have seen a bad ECM do this on 2.8/3.1s, both carb'd and injected, and the ECM won't always tell on itself...
