Installing Tensioner, How hard is it?

Basically I need to install new belt tensioners... Is this something I can to myself? I'm done with paying outrageous laber prices!! I can use that money to by tools and do it myself. Any Info would be highly appriciated! Thank You!

well, depending on how good you are at replacing a timing belt, it shouldnt be too difficult. you would have to take off the PS and alternator belts, take the driver's side wheel off. then take off the driver's side mount and jack the engine up a bit. take out the dust shield that sits in the wheel well. take off the timing belt covers. if you are replacing both tensioners you have to take off the timing belt completely. replace the tensioners, and while you are in there, check the balance shaft belts and pulleys. personally I would replace everything you could, including the timing belt, while you are in there. water pump too, unless its not too old. with the new tensioner pulley and hydralic tensioner on and compressed, line up the timing marks and start putting your belt back on. after the belt is on make sure the timing marks are still lined up correctly, release the tensioner pin and check again that all marks line up. then put everything else back together.

edit: you know i just realized you are not turbo. might be a tad different lol...other side of the engine too i think. ..... someone help!

Tensioners for which belts? I assume your talkin about for the 98 eclipse. The tensioners for the alternator belt and power steering/AC are just bolts that adjust the tensioner pulleys. The timing belt uses a hydrolic tensioner.

It should be to hard and you should be able to do it yourself if you have a little bit of knowledge about how to take stuff apart and put it back correctly.

yeah i didnt see his sig, i actually looked at the car domain and saw the air filter and intake on the "wrong" side...lol then i knew it was a 420a.

Also not too sure about 1g's, but on my car (I know its a different trim and year and model etc)there is a hydrolic tensioner and a tensioner pulley. I didn't know if 1g's had that.

Yes its a hydralic tensioner for the T-Belt. Its a PITA to take off the carnk pulley though, but like 3am said, it can be done. Take the passenger side and the tranny mount and jack the engine up and down with a block of wood and a jack at the oil pan. Pretty expensive, especially the T-Belt tensioner. The other tensioners are adjustable mechanical ones.

Which tensioner(s) are you replacing, and more important, why are you replacing them? The hydraulic timing belt one doesn't need to be replaced unless you're doing a timing belt change, and the accessory belt one doesn't need replacing ever, unless it's damaged in some way. Save your money and knuckles and don't do them until they need replacing.

...And even then the accessory tension pulley is almost indestructible. I can't think of a way to break it or damage it without dropping a bomb on it.

As Garrett asked, why are you replacing it? And is it the TBelt tensioner?



And no balance shafts on 420a for reference
