painting question

So, my Caprice to Impala conversion is going to start finally.

However, there's one thing I can't quite figure out. What color was the Impala SS?

I saw one today, and the one I liked looked Black, but when sunlight hit it, it almost had a violet color. Asked the owner, and he said it was stock like that.

What is that color, and can a painting shop mimick it?

burgundy was one of the color options, black was the other. those are the only 2 colors i've actually seen.

Black, that dark cherry/burgundy and a nice light almost jade green
black seemed to be more common in 94, the burgundy/dark cherry was available along with black in 95. then in 96 they introduced the light/jade green (IF i remember right)

you will find a chart which tells how many where made per year in what color.

i was kinda right, the 94s where only available in black but the light green (they call it dark gray green) was available in 95 and 96 along with the Dark Cherry. that is if the information is right

aside from that Ahem... dark gray green... the Dark Cherry is one of my favorites. my 83 was almost the same as the cherry just with a little more brown, when i have it painted im going for something similar to that cherry color. considering the color is still fairly new and the fact the SS is copied as much as it is, the body shop will prob be able to get the actual color from a supplier

Ok. So, if I go to a painting shop and ask to get my caprice painted "Dark Cherry Metallic", then my car will come back looking exactly like an Impala, paint and color wise?

with the money you will be spending on a total repaint i would go with a picture of an actual SS in the color you want and tell them you want it like "this". with the variety of paint colors out there these days if you just ask for "Dark Cherry Metallic" you might not get what you want...

That is Dark Green Grey Metallic or DGGM in ImpSS circles.

Both of mine are black, but only because I couldn't get a darker color.

As for repainting, if you want DCM, get the paint code from the SPID/RPO label in the trunk lid of an original. Strip all the body rubber so that everything gets painted. You'll also have to do the underside of the hood and deck lid, and well as the margins of the quarters, fenders, behind the headlights and tail lights, the engine compartment, firewall, and of course in the door jambs. Plan on about five quarts of paint for the complete job with a low volume gun.

I was actually going to have mine professionally done. One of my friends owes me a favor, and he and his father are in the auto business.

The plan was to sandblast all of the old paint off (it's starting to age in some spots) and completely repaint it brand new.

(btw, tomorrow I'm getting an LT1 put in, and computer reprogrammed.. i wonder how that knock sensor error goes with that, since it's the same computer, but all new parts that need to be LT1 specific)

Sandblasting might not be the best idea. All the factory zinc primer, polymer seal, and some of the galvanizing on panels could be compromised, allowing rust to eat the car to nothing. I'm sure a professional finisher would advise against it in most cases.

Instead of stripping completely, it might be better to repair the failing areas, seal everything with catalyzed primer (non air dry like Omni or DP), and finish with a catalyzed paint,like DBU before the urethane clearcoat.

Well I won't be there during the painting process. I'm assuming they know what they are doing, because they are highly rated, and I've seen the work they did and it looks very good.
