new oil leak

1996 3.2l auto rodeo. I just replaced
my water pump, and when I was cleaning I found that the baseplate for my oil filter was leaking. It is not leaking where the filter actually seals to it, but on the opposite side of that plate. Is there a way to take it apart and reseal it, or do I need to replace the whole damn thing?

Ahh, the oil cooler o-ring. This is a common problem on MKIII VWs, and it also happened on my '97 Rodeo. This is an easy and quick fix. There is a large o-ring which is sandwiched between the oil cooler and the flange. You'll have to unscrew the filter, unscrew a large nut at the top of the threaded tube, remove the old brittle ring, put the new one in and button things up. Good luck.

Here's mine:

If your leak is coming from a spot closer to the filter, it may not be the o-ring...

ok good. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to replace the whole thing. not sure how expensive it would be, but just dumped 900 bucks into the truck, and am running low on funds.

I don't think it is closer to the filter than than the oil cooler, but I will check it out to be sure. Is that o ring a dealer only item?

Is that o ring a dealer only item? probably unless you were desperate and could take it in somewhere and match it up for size.

here's the parts illustration from the online isuzu parts site www.myisuzuparts.com (http://www.myisuzuparts.com)

the oring you are talking about is #195. fyi, there are also 2 other oring seals #272 where the oil cooler/fileter bracket connects to the oilpump, which also leak.

I tried to copy and paste that image for him and couldn't get it out of Acrobat. I got my part from St. Charles Automotive as I was ordering several other parts at the same time.

This thread is amazing. My passport has been leaking for two years from this spot. I have the part ordered and on it's way I'll do it tomorrow. I am going to attempt to post a write up with pictures if I have the time to.

Well its done, and the o-ring was flat. no wonder it was leaking. super easy too. just need a 1 1/4 socket to take it apart. bam no leaks anymore:iceslolan . the damn o ring was 12 bucks at the dealer. probably the most expensive oring I have ever purchased in my life.

I did this same repair on my VW first. When I took it apart, I didn't think the ring was even there because it was so flat and brittle, it didn't look anything like what I was replacing it with.
